I've got it all torn down except the lifters and the crank and pistons. The problem is that the engine(given to me)had sat in the rain apparently. The pistons are frozen to the walls and I can't figure a way to turn the engine by hand to free it up to get the pistons unbolted.I put a breaker bar on the harmonic balancer bolt and broke the bolt off in the crank. The crank is broke anyway.that's why it was given to me.Any ideas on how to turn it over?

The lifters will not pull out either.I got them out just over an inch, but they won't budge any further.I thought they were supposed to slide in and pull out easily?

As for the crank, undo the mains and pull the crank, pistons and rods out as one. They're all shot anyway, by the sound of it. Or undo the mains and hammer the pistons down towards the crank.

Lifters, soak 'em in PB Blaster or something stronger than WD40, I guess, 'cuz they're rusted in there ... don't think you can hammer them out from below even with the cam out.

That block is gonna need serious love 'fore you can use it again, methinks... anyway, wait for 4X4HIGH to post up, he'll know useful things. (Though he may tell you not to use the hammer, even a ballpeen :haha: )

OK, as suspected here i am. If the engine is frozen so bad you can't turn it over here is what you do. Loosen all the main bolts and as many rod nuts as you can get to. Remove any pistons that you can beat out with a BFH and then since the main bolts are loose you should be able to start turning the crank some to start being able to reach the rod bolts that you previously couldn't reach. If non of this works and the crank is broken anyways break out the cutting torch and just cut the crank and or rods and remove them.

Oh, you cannot pull pistons out from the bottom of the block as they'll hit the block main webbing and won't come out.

The lifters probably have a gunk build up on the bottom diameter and once you have the crank out of the way you'll be able to use a screw driver or the like and drive the lifters out through the valley area then you can pull the cam out.
