Well, what I have is a stock 350 with Edelbrock performer
intake and Edelbrock 600cfm carb.
I 'm used to shift gear @ 3.200 rpm, now I dicovered there is lots of torque from 4.000 to 5.000 rpm as well.
4th gear is a pain, max. speed 135 mph at 3.200 rpm.
Changing gears from 3.40 to 4.56 will bring her in better rpm, right?
My question is:
1. will higher rpm cause any bad to my 21y old 350?
2. how much u estimate the loss in mileage?
3. how much work is it to change gears?
4. looking for lockers front/rear anyhow, your suggestion?

mmmhhhh, forget to say 10bolt front/12bolt rear.

btw, have a chance to get an old 14bolt, 4.56, detroit from an army K5 for $600, change completely?

wear of an engine goes up exponentially, 1000 rpm wears an engine at X rate. 2000rpm wears an engine at X(10)rate, 3000 rpm wears at X(20) rate....so on and so forth, so at 6000 rpm your wearing your engine down 50 times faster than at 1000 rpm. I have a couple of questions for you. why do you want such steep gears?? 4.10s with 31s even 33s with that nice 3.06 first gear of a 700 should allow you to tow jusy about anything. I had the same motor basically in an 81 suburban, 400 trans 4.10 full floater 14 bolt, and I towed my friends 24 foot Mack truck about a mile to his house from mine, 30 miles an hour. God knows how much that thing weighs. No problems at all. Also how tall are your tires. I would put 4.10s in. YTour cost if you have someone do the front and back i would guess about $1500 or more with all the parts.

Well, it's even better than what you describe:
35" tires, but SM465 (6.55 1st.) and NP205 gives much low end torque betw. 1000 and 2500 rpm, she tows nearly everything away.
To be honest, it really hurts to hear that nice engine running 3.500 rpm+.
Just thought I could give her some add. torque at high speed, i.e. betw. 100 and 135 mph by changing gears when installing lockers.

How often do you go 100-135 in a K5??!! Sounds to me like you have a great set up as it is...except for the front blocks...

10 BOLTS O' FUN

It's 1:3.4 total 4th. gear 2or4hi, so 100mph(160kmh)@ 2500 rpm, max. speed 135mph (210kmh) @ 3200 rpm, on 35" !

Do this quite often, remember german highways = no speed limit (o.k. 70% limited to 120kmh),
normal cruising speed over here is 160 kmh.
Not many 2.5t trucks left lane over here, lol!!!

You do know that thoes front blocks are VERY dangerous!!
crazy.gif

If you really go that fast then I would be scard to ride in your rig!
I would forget about spending your money on gears and get NEW front leaf springs and lift the front of your rig the right way!!

Dude, yeah, what Burt said, you should spend your money on some new front springs. Ditch those front blocks dude. One small bump at high speeds and your truck go bye-bye and you might too. Good luck

uuuuhhhh, Burt, you warned me so many times and answered
all my post asking for the best spring set-up.
4" Tuff country EZ front, 4" shackle-flip and new rear
springs are allready on their short way over the Atlantic
ocean and their long way through german customs!!!!

Thanks for yall support, but what about LOCKERS ???
I want front and rear, any suggestion ???

I did??I read and type way to much on the internet...
crazy.gif

I may repete myself from time to time..??..
I would hate for a fellow K5er to get hurt !!
Lockers, well I don't have em but If and when I go from posi to locked I would run a Detroit in the rear and an ARB in the front! Sence you drive allot on the HWY I would NOT lock the front with a conventional locker go with the on/off ARB or get a tight Posi like a Dana Power-Lock!
Good Luck

Hehehe, thats why people like you are called "old hands" b/c
their hands look old from typing all day long....

Like the on/off locks, how do the ARBs shift in the pins, hydr., pneum., wire ??? Looked for Schwarz lockers (german),
but they ask $1000 10bolt and $1200 12 bolt, way too much.
