Engine help

Ok now onto my next question, can I pull the plug wire off and crank the engine to get it to TDC?

That will get you close.

You will probably need someone to help you get exact (within a degree or two) by using something such as a screwdriver to stick into the spark plug hole and hold upwards on the screw driver against the top of the spark plug hole as your helper now turns the crankshaft in the normal rotation and as the piston is approuching TDC the screwdriver handle should be moving down, once the handle stops moving and begins to move upward that is TDC.

There is an easier way to find TDC but you would have to buy a degree wheel and have all pulleys removed from the crank and then make a pointer to aim at the degree wheel and you would also need a TDC stop. It is easier the way i described without having to buy any tools or remove any parts.

Ok I found out a few things. My engine does have a timing tab on the cover but it's on the drivers side. So you are correct the balancer would hide behind the water pump.

Also I changed the spark plugs and wires the other day and my Dad took a glance at them on the distributor and they were not flush. I fired it up and no ticking but It only ticked when it was nice and warm. In a bit after dinner or tomorrow I'm going to get it really warm and see.

I believe that would cause the engine to tick correct?

Ticking seems to be gone now. :D It's still loading up a little bit and the revs go up and down on there own. I sat for awhile and revved it up/ power braking and I could see puffs of black smoke come out.

In the drive way if you hit the throttle hard it will kind of die and sound like its choked of air then come back alive.

We are almost there!!

THANK GOD

Took it back threw emissions it scored 119 on carbon monoxide. It's running good to, it doesn't stink of fuel or smoke. On the sniffer at work it reaches the max of 29. Thats with opening the throttle at 3k rpm's and doing a idle test. I'm lost at what to do, maybe it's time to take the old girl out back and put a bullet in her.
