I suspect the motor in my '74 may not be original. I'm trying to get to the engine block ID numbers behind the number 7 cylinder. How in the heck do you get back there???? It's tucked way under the firewall so far that I can't seem to get to it.

Any recommendations on how to get to it or alternative locations to identify the engine?

Thanks!

Passenger side front of block where head ends. There is a flat area that has the id for the block.

I'm assuming this is a SBC your looking at?....if those stamped engine numbers are on the block that will give you the best indication of the engines original application.
The casting number is pretty generic as far as what the engine was used for...many applications used the same casting number. try cleaning the area with some GUNK, mineral spirits, or other engine cleaner, then use a mirror to see whats there...the other side will show the date casting which can be hard to figure out on some blocks.

Clean up the area back there like Dave said, and the trick I use instead of a mirror is a good cellphone :waytogo:. Turn your flash on and poke the camera end over the gap... take 4 or 5 so you know you got a good one.

as said back of block = just the casting for the engine ie: 305/350/327/302/283 so on so forth . and some are grouped like 302/327/350 all same bore .

the partial vin to match your vehicle is on pad cast in front of engine right / pass side front of block under alt .

Totally works...I have done this. :thumb:

I was using my phone's flashlight app trying to see in the mirror, while laying all up on my motor for like 20 min trying to get the right spot and then it dawned on me...:doah:

I used my camera on my phone to get the casting on the back of the block... gotta take a few pics to get a good one but it's definitely possible.

Ok, so I got back out and grabbed the engine Number on the front passenger side of the block and casting numbers (sort of) on the back drivers side.

Engine number is: VF013268. There doesn't appear to be a suffix code.

On the back of the engine block, on the drivers side where the casting number usually is supposed to be says "5.7 LG SGI" and has a GM logo.

So I'm confused. Aside from identifying that V= Flint I can't seem to figure out any other details.

Any help?

(And where are those pesky casting numbers?!)

Thanks!

block casting # is bell housing area between the #2 and #3 bell housing bolt holes. directly behind the left head surface.

Almost sounds like a crate motor

Yeah, later model 350 or gen 1 replacement block . Look in the same spot on the pass side at the rear and get the block id numbers. If last 3 are 880 I believe it would be a vortec truck engine, at least thats what my buddy has.

It's a non-original 350, that much you know.

Plastic timing cover, no fuel pump blockoff plate/no fuel pump rod would mean it's a later one piece rear main Vortec replacement.

If it's got perimeter valve cover bolts, the heads are not any of the newer designs.

Most folks wouldn't have gone from a two piece rear main motor to a one piece, so likely one of the crate engines made for the earlier trucks.
