I've got an early tube & fin style (70's-ish) engine oil cooler I'd like to use for a p/s cooler - any reason I shouldn't?

Assuming I'm careful about bleeding the system, any reason I can mount it horizontally?

Just ripped one of these off the new truggy truck. Was wondering if itd be useful anywhere. Subd :waytogo:

Mount it lower than the power steering pump tank and make sure you don't use any fittings that downsize in diameter.

I tried to use a small cooler once, brass fittings were too small, restricting flow, it didn't work out.

I have a remote resevoir that will mount above the pump. I plan on mounting it low like in the picture which is relatively even with the pump itself.

Used one similar in the blazer. Seems to work good.

Where did the lines originally mount to the motor on these? Seems every time i see one the lines have been cut off and capped with no lines to the motor.. Some adapter over the filter? My 305 that was original to the blazer had it, but no trace of any hook ups on the motor for it. Mines still in the blazer stuffed with rags from the po.

not meaning to threadjack but what do you mean by bleed the system? i just installed an oil cooler on my k5 (replaced the factory one which was leaking and cracked from an inpact). i just drained my oil, pulled my filter, pulled the hoses, installed a new cooler and hooked up hoses and screwed the filter back on. i was planning on just throwing 5 quarts in through the valve cover. is this okay or do i need to prime the cooler somehow?

Engine oil is a self bleeding system, If you are filling the cooler as well I would expect to use 6+ Qts of oil in the end.

They are talking about power steering systems that need to be bled to work.

I used an old tranny cooler for my P/S, works great. I bled mine by jacking the front end up and turning lock to lock a few dozen times, and that was all she wrote.

thanks for the clarification, i remember changing diesel oil filters and needing to fill them up before putting them on, that's what i was thinking of. glad that isn't the case though.

I picked up a couple of Harley Davidson engine oil coolers at a swap meet. They are well built, compact and were easy to plumb into the power steering return line.

Should be fine. I used a B&M and mounted it like this with no problems.

also went B&M. i used the factory original mounting brackets by bending them a little and drilling larger holes in the B&M cooler. 1/2 hose, clamps, and barb fitting connect it all together. hope it does not leak.
