OK so i have a barrel of 15w-40 Caterpillar engine oil. I haven't opened it yet because I am sort of "in between" diesels right now......but have had it in garage a couple months.was sitting a few months before too

I very recently heard IE read on the inter-web that engine oil or oils period if left sitting can have the additive package settle out?

is this true?

How to prevent?

I've never seen that but i suppose it could happen. Im no oil expert either.
If the drum is still sealed throw it in the back of your truck and go wheeling. Better than a paint shaker!

I've never heard of that.. doesn't mean it isn't true, I'm just sayin'..

If it's sealed, I'd use it and not worry.. normally, the only things that make additives fall out of suspension are when the base oil can't hang onto them due to heat & pressure...just sitting there shouldn't hurt it.

K thanks, that is what I though myself. but i just came across that, and though I should throw it out there just in case.

This is anecdotal, but in years past I have seen "stuff" in the bottom of quart oil bottles after pouring the oil into the engine. I have no clue what it was though . They were sealed bottles of name brand oil, although I don't remember which brand...

all our marine lubes are 55's... some sit quite some time... I've never heard that before..

Ditto, never heard of that before. In any case, a few months is a pretty short period of time for oil to be sitting. If it were a few years I might think about it, about a few months is nothing.

In the military we used motor oil in our gear that had been sitting somewhere for years...and years...and it was fine. Pop the top, install the pump, and it all pumped out nice and oily
