Once the truck comes back, I may put a new heart under the hood.
It's been a LONG time since I even looked at any engines. Not to mention my lack of truck has made me half chevy retarded.
From what I understand, the truck currently has a 350 jasper, and a broken quadra-bog on it. It's an 84, so it has the half-assed "Electronic Spark Control" on it.
I'd like to rip it out in favor for some self contained EFI small block. I was planning on strappign TBI on the truck, but the actual throttle body has been ruined, and I feel I can get some kinda HO SBC for a fairly good price.
Though I'd perfer EFI (As it'd give me a reason to buy another set of JBl shorty headers, and keep my current 3" single), I can still stay carbed, as that's what came on the truck.
So what are my options?

your options are endless. thats kind of to random a question cause hell you could put a toyota 4cyl in there, its an option.

is it a daily driver?
do you need more torque than high end?
big block or staying small block?

we need more info.

Well, I do want it to be streetable.
It'll be mated to the stock 700R4.
I am hoping for EFI. Being it is a truck. more torque is better than horespower. However, there is a certain limit a stock 700 can probably take.
Just something to swap in, so I guess a SBC 4 bolt.

If you want a small block with balls, put in a 383 stroker ( a 350 cu.in. bored .030 over with a 400 crank )

The company I work for used to buy Jasper (gas ) engines for several trucks they used. Over the years they purchased several different engines for the various trucks. Within one year of service all these engines became junk. Our mechanics started to dissasemble the long blocks and inspect the pistons, bearings cylinder walls, etc before installing them in the trucks. Not suprisingly scored main and rod bearings, one cylinder would be .020" overbored with a standard sizes piston in the hole. I am sure their quality has improved over the years. They probably purchase their engine components from Mexico, China And Korea. We all know the quality of items made in those countries.
With the price of parts and labor, a long block or complete engine from Summit or Jegs may be a better option than rebuilding it yourself. Plus it is broke in ,tested and guaranteed.

:thinking:Hmm. You may be onto something there.
I'll wait for my new Summit catalog and look in there.
I want it to be something I can go to the local parts store and just throw a replacement in. I'm not sure how common strokers are, but I do want reliability.
I WAS thinking a Pontiac 400 SB. But I can probably get a good 350 with a bit less price wise

I got 70K miles on my 383 and just put it in my 91 burb. A guy in Columbus, OH built it for me. He gave me a 2 yr. 24K mile warranty. After the first 3K miles it has been on Mobil 1 synthetic. GM sells a 383 stroker motor.

I purchased a very plain jane GM Goodwrench 350 from Jegs. Super little motor. Gas mileage not as good as my 6 cyl pick up with o/d, but heck of a lot more fun.
Of course I love the sound of the exhaust, so fuel mileage suffers from my right foot.

Really though, the engine was inexpensive, should be super dependable (they've been building that solid pushrod v-8 for how long?) it has enough power to keep me happy, but not so much I can't let my daughters drive it. Watch Jegs and they will put them on sale. I got mine for less than $2,100. (that included carb and chrome goodies)

A friend of mine was telling me about a simple engine swap. He says the '02 6.0 liters may be up my ally, as I can get EFI, and it's basically a bolt in. Sending out the harness/ECM shouldn't be a problem.
Has anyone heard of this before? From what I understand, it's a fairly common swap because of the easy power gains.

From what I have read, it is a highly desirable swap because of the power, reliability, efficiency, etc., but it is not a "basically" bolt in deal. Of course, I was reading up on doing this in a first gen, so maybe it is a lot easier in the later ones.

Here is a pretty good engine source.
