engine pan magnet ?

i want to put a magent on my oil pan sump, externally, what can i use, what has anyone else used that worked well ?

Harddrives have big time strong magnets in them. Find a junk old computer and smash the hardrive apart and steal that magnet.

I used an extra magnet from a tranny pan (round one in a 700r4) and used epoxy to glue it to the pan. I put it on the back side of the pan close to the bottom to help keep it from getting ripped off. I may put it inside when I build my 383 instead of on the outside.

I've also been told that the best place is actually on the bottom of the filter so the debris gets removed from the system on a regular basis.
After some thought that may be the best place for me to move mine too as well. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

haha I'm trying to figure this out as we speak. I was ripping an old junker apart(mine use phillips). One screw won't come out though

well i got it all apart, i just drilled all the screws haha, the magnet is strong but it is way too small to use for oil pan, its tiny only an inch long /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif you might as well give up anyways

Why don't you just use a magnetic oil pan drain plug? I have been using those for years. Whenever you change the oil, you can see what kind of debris it has collected. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I'm sure you found the right magnet, it's on what I believe is the head assembly. Whne you get the HDD case open (for everyones reference) you'll see it resembles a record player. The actual plates where the data is stored is not where the magnets are. They are located where the "arm" pivots, in the corner of the case.

1" isn't too small, all factory magnets I've seen, and magnetic drain plugs, are all smaller than this, and weaker to boot. I snapped one onto my oil filter. If I had a bunch of them, I'd snap a few onto it if I was really worried about it.

i put the one on my pan so far, i want to take apart a coupel more old HDD's and put some more on the pan too.
