engine problem...

In that last picture, that *isn't* a huge crack (in the bottom center) where the EVAP fitting is, is it??

It just looks like gas has seeped out before . The fumes are supposed to go into the EVAP like dorian said . Otherwise it doesn't look too old . I run the same carb . Someone probably tightened that front bolt too tight and cracked the airhorn there . You may need another top , or whole carb . I would try JB weld if I was cheap and had to go to work , but I wouldn't condone it and replace it asap :k5: :k5:

It seems very hard to believe that is a crack...

first off, those are two seperate pieces. How the crack would pass through both in the same place I can't see. That torx screw shouldn't allow enough torque to crack the carb either. Perhaps a hammer blow or it got dropped?

Make sure it's not a casting line, although it doesn't appear straight enough for that.

If nothing else, that crack *might* be causing a bit of a vacuum leak. IIRC that EVAP port isn't "timed", it's full manifold vacuum. However, even if it isn't full manifold vacuum, there are likely "circuits" under there that route air and/or fuel, and if those are leaking, could cause issues.

Try pulling on the large fitting (EVAP) and see if it comes out easy. If it does, you have a problem. Don't wiggle it or anything, just try pulling straight out on it by hand. If it doesn't come out, grab the fitting, and push it away from the crack, watching to see if the crack gets wider. If it does, I say look for another carb.

Check to make sure the crack doesn't go any further under as well. If it truly is a crack, I would be shopping for another carb in any case, (nothing wrong with getting another uncracked Q-jet to rebuild) no matter how "bad" the crack really is, it can't be helping matters!

oh great:(

Dorian, I will do that stuff you suggested tomorrow (its dark right now) and find out if its a crack or not. So most likely I will have to find another carb (mine would be a q-jet, right?)
How much am I looking at spending? I will get a used one, or one that needs a rebuild...just for extra knowledge I will get from taking it apart.
So until I get a new one (or fix it) I shouldn't be driving it?

Thanks

I couldn't pull the hose off, but there is a clamp on it?
I pushed on the fitting, and I couldn't see the crack move.

I fired it up for a couple minutes today, and it choked almost everytime I gave it gas. :(
How much would a used Q-jet cost? I'll put an add in the wanted section once I have the approx. money...
thanks

You can usually buy Q-jets around here at swap meets for $5 if you look around. Going to need a rebuild at that cost, but thats a good learning experience.

I'd say $20-40 for a "good" used one off a running vehicle wouldn't be bad, if you were hoping to just slap it on and go.

Pull that hose off and see if at idle, there is vacuum at that port. If there is, it is possible the crack isn't the cause of the stalling problem. If there is vacuum at idle, then the crack, if it goes into that passage, would affect idle as well.

All you do is pull the hose off while it's running. You can plug it ith your finger, you'll feel/hear if there is vacuum there...engine will likely die if it is a big vacuum leak and you don't plug it. Idle will definitely change if its a vacuum leak.
