good day guys,

i am having a problem with my 454 engine, the story goes like this:

i was having some problems with starting the engine some time ago, and the problem was from the coil of the HEI, after replacing it and starting the engine, it started but a little rough...

i gave it some time to warm up then i wanted to drive it a bit.. but it was still rough.. then i gave the engine a big throttle and a big bang happened which caused lots of black smoke to come out and then the engine cleared out.. i started to drive it a bit.. then i noticed that some times when i give it some gas i hear the sound similar to metal hitting each other...i dont know what the sound is from... but the engine does run normally except for the sound that comes and goes all the time.. i am sure its not from the crank...

does anyone know whats its from..??

Some details on the year and model of the truck would be helpful but it sounds like you might be experiencing ignition ping or early detonation while you are under a load.

First thing to try is a better grade of gas with a higher octane rating. You said that you had a problem with it starting, was the timing changed or moved or only the coil changed at the time you repaired that problem?

yes.. the timing was changed... plus i just checked and found that one of the distributer screws was broken!!!.. i think that could be the cause..

i use octane 91 with the truck.. which is a 1981 k5 with a 91 454 engine
