Engine Question.

I know this may be a long shot.. Here's my question..
Are all chevy truck engines 4bolt mains?
I might be buying a 1977 Suburban 3/4 ton with a 350 in it.. I'm not sure if it's original.. I'm going to find out this weekend I hope..
I'm just hoping it's a 4 bolt main engine...

No, just on the technicality that there were no 4 bolt 305's : ) I think your chances are pretty good its a 4 bolt if its out of a 3/4 ton though. Only way to know for sure is to pull the pan. If it turns out to be, why not pull the suffix codes off it and let us (or me) know. I'm betting that if one block with suffix code "XXX" had 4 bolt mains, so did every other block with the same suffix code. I'm thinking of putting a list together of suffix codes w/ 4bolts. Casting number alone, as I'm sure you know, is not usually an indicator of 4 bolts, as most 4 bolts i know of, have a casting number that COULD be either a 2 or 4 bolt. Take heart if its a 2 bolt, if you install splayed main caps (aftermarket) that is stronger than a factory 4 bolt.

<font color=blue>I know for a fact that you can tell how many bolts the main cap has from the code. When my old motor took a dump, I took the # to a chevy dealership and they told me it was a 350 4 bolt from a 79 1/2 ton truck.</font color=blue>

You could also take the VIN # to a chevy dealer and they could tell you. If the motor hasn't been changed.

So what your saying is that GM dealers have access to a database of suffix codes, and from that, they will know whether its a 2 or 4 bolt? thats very cool...just wish I could get my hands on that database : )

My uncle's mid-80's 3/4-tonSuburban came with a 4-bolt 350. He was surprised, but happy, since him and his mechanic were checking that to decide which blower pulley to install...
