Engine rebuild ?'s

But if a stock motor goes 200000 miles, why not keep it that way?? Wouldnt a "cheap rebuild" be better than what ive got now?

a cheap rebuild will be better, yes......but you're talking about a daily driver that you're going to play in the dunes with......after you drive it there. i'm not trying to discourage you in rebuilding your motor. but after all the mistakes i've made in this life, i've come to realize that "cheap" really does mean CHEAP.....as in junk parts and shoddy machine work costing more in the long run.

when i was growin up my pop used to tell me that a poor man can't afford to buy cheap tools......and from being in the house building/renovating business i've often told people and bosses that if you don't have the time to do it right the first time you won't have the time to do it AGAIN.......for what it's worth.

.

Yah i know. Im not talkin about spending $200 to get the thing rebuilt. Im going for around $500-$600 for a decent setup. Idk if thats too cheap, im sure it is for you guys lol. I just figure that if i can spend $500 and it goes 100000 miles with no engine trouble, i would be more than happy to put another 500 in then, you know?? I dont drive very far lol. Ive put maybe 2500 on my truck in the like 6 months ive owned it. Ive put like 5000 miles on my van ive had for 3 years lol. My dd. And ive changed the oil in it prolly 6 times lol, and my blazer 3 times haha.

if you have a knock you'll need to pull the whole thing down to rebuild. a kit will run you around $350 for pistons, rings, bearings, pump, gaskets and such. what about the rotating assembly? machining? what shape are your heads in, will they need work too? i'll bet you can find a good used motor with low miles for $500......may even go the additional 100K.

there is nothing wrong with stock.....especially if it is built well.

Oh yah i plan to remove the whole thing, rip it completely down, i guess i just dont know what to look for in having stuff machined.

Yah i found a kit on summit for like $350, comes with all seals, main bearings, rings, pistons, and a bunch of other stuff. Then i would want new valves along with that, and and that gear drive, prolly a new cam which is $52 for the one on their, i just dont know if thats the one i need lol.

I think it would be fun to rebuild one if it isnt too hard. I dont mind the time or money put into it really. I just figure that mine is sitting their, i dont think i would buy an engine and slap it in because i wouldnt feel safe about it. I would want to fix up that one which i would end up spending this money plus cost of another engin, then what do i do with the 305??

And it does have that knock but only when oil pressure is low at idle, not all the time, idk if that means anything though. Basically higher than 800rpms it goes away, or when its cold

Mostly because they are "interference" motors where when the timing slips/breaks the piston slaps valves!

Exactly.

Way back when, I used to hang out in the automotive section of CompuServe.
A bunch of top notch mechanics, techs, a few factory engineers, and me.

We would take on all comers when folks would write in with car trouble.
We got ones like "why is my car making that funny noise?"

I'm serious, we got that one word for word. No car type, or description of the noise.

But timing belts were just getting started back then, and not a week went by without someone writing in to complain that his dealer or mechanic was trying to rip them off by saying their timing belt had to be changed or it would ruin the motor.

We finally wrote an explanation about interference engines and also why it was a good idea to replace the water pump at the same time, and just refereed them to that writeup.

Saved a ton of time.
