I'm very good at following instructions. I was wondering if anyone was aware of a web site that contained a general guide on how to remove an engine from a k5 blazer.

It really is as simple as unbolting/unplugging everything and hooking your hoist up and lifting it out (drain fluids first). There is not much to these and the electrical connections are hard to mess up as they really only plug w/ one type of connector for each item. The best advise is just dive in and get started and it will all make sense.

The fifteen bucks you'd spend on a Chilton's or Hayne's would be fifteen bucks well spent.

That said, it's pretty easy; remove all the wires and plumbing, detach the tranny from the motor (or if it's coming too, undo it from the t-case or driveshaft, shifter, etc), pull the motor up a bit, undo the motor mounts, pull the motor more.

Of course, "all the wires" could be complicated (is it carb? TBI?) and "pull the motor" relies on your having a carb plate and/or engine balancer, etc.

Also depends if you're just removing, i.e. parting the thing out, or if you're doing and R&R wherein the truck has to run afterwards :haha:

Seriously, consider a service manual. :deal:

Its a 1985 K5 with a 400ci (carb). I need to put the motor back in after I'm done. The freeze plugs need replacement, oil pan, head gasket, spark plugs, water pump gaskets. I just need to get it out of the truck, make sure everything is sealed up and freshened. I could do most of this with the motor in, but if its not that difficult to pull the motor, I'd rather do that.

If it were me I'd do it with the block in the truck 'cuz I hate the tranny-to-block bolts ... the oilpan, though, could be a pain getting around the crossmember.

So ...

* drain the thing (oil, water)
* undo the radiator hoses
* remove and lay aside accessories: smog, AC, steering pump, and alternator -- remember to undo the negative battery wire(s)!
* Pull the carb and plumbing off
* yank the dizzy and wiring
* undo the exhaust manifolds
* support the tranny, undo the bellhousing bolts to the block
* attach cherrypicker to motor, either to block or carb plate

then pull it up enough to get the motor mounts undone, and then yank it all the way out.

If it were me I'd entirely remove the radiator so it doesn't get bashed, and take the hood off entirely. Realigning it is less work than trying to weasel a motor out from under, IMO.
