Ok so I just got done putting on new intake and manifold and valve covers and now my engine is constantly backfiring on acceleration. I changed to the Edelbrock Performer intake with an idle-5500 rpm range. It has a Jegs HEI distributor and an edelbrock 1406 carb.

It previously had the Torker II manifold and stock HEI dist. I also took off the carb spacer. Could that be part of the problem? My buddy says I might have carbon build up on the valves, could that be it as well?

I got the engine at TDC and set the rotor to the #1 cylinder and got base timing set. I dont have a timing light until Friday so I was just trying to get it to run decently. But everytime I accelerate it backfires as soon as I let off the throttle.

As always I really appreciate your guys help. I am trying to upload a video as well so you can hear how it sounds.

Well I got the engine timed right and it still stumbles on acceleration and back fires when I let off the throttle. Any suggestions? I know very little about engine work. THanks

Sounds like your timing is off, or could be a vacuum leak in there also. check all your hoses.

but really sounds like your timing might be a tad off

Ok I will double check it tomorrow. My buddy said he would help me and he has a better light than the one I borrowed. Thanks
