Next Crisis:

As you may know, i've swapped a 4.3 in where a 305 was. Anyways i can get it to start up pretty easy, but it immediately stalls out---like after only a split second to 1 second.

i'm leaning/hoping maybe the timing is too retarded; When i was messing around with the distributor last weekend, constantly taking the cap off and on and doing tests (see other post entitled "no spark, no tach signal") the distributor did move---apparently wasn't tightened down well. Maybe not enough to retard it bad, then again maybe.

i don't think it's fuel or the choke---it's pretty warm here right now. Plus, i experimented with the choke. Opening it all the way, opening it a little right after startup, keeping it closed. But all still the same results.

Thoughts?

As in as soon as you let off the start to the run position like you turned the key off?
If so your running on the start circuit, wiring problem or ign switch problem.

i am getting 12V from the ignition wire (red) when the switch is in the run position though.

How did you go from no spark to starts and quits?
I think

I'd run a hot wire directly from the batt to the dist + side and see if it will run to rule out the ignition circuit.

Electric or mechanical fuel pump?

i put in a new module so either the module was bad (doubtful), or the pickup coil wires were not plugged into the module enough (more likely).

mechanical pump.

So if i run a wire from the battery to the Batt/B+ terminal in the cap, do i need to put a fuse in line? Will it possibly hurt anything w/ no fuse?

Just for a test is use a straight jumper, but if your concerned use a fuse.
You haven't blown the ignition fuse.

Power in to distributor but only momentary out.
Only thing left is distributor itself assuming you have positive fuel supply.

I had this issue when I put the engine in the Jimmy. Only ran on the start circuit. Turn it to run and it would quit. Forgot to attach the starter to battery feed. I went through all of the electronics and ignition stuff before I found the lead under the battery box.:doah: Hooked it up and it ran great.

what is starter to battery feed?

Sorry, was on my phone and did not read your post correctly. A one 0 wire runs from the batery to the big lug on the starter. This then feeds the truck.

UPDATE:

i decided to re-do the wiring on the starter(didn't change anything though)---just in case a wire might have been loose etc.

The starter kept running until i disconnected battery ground.

i put another starter on just to check. What happened was after installing "new" starter and battery ground i turned the key to the start position. The engine didn't seem like it was going to start so i turned the key back to the off position and the starter kept running and i had to disconnect battery ground.

Getting desperate. And i might........well, nevermind---i'll hold it until later.

You clearly have a wiring problem. Get a wiring diagram and start checking one by one in the engine bay.

had this happen when one of the wires looked like this under the electrical tape previous owner put on it
