engine swap

Hey all, this is my first post. first off, I have an 81 gmc jimmy. it originally has the I-6 motor but at about 247,000 miles, the engine locked up on me. I was expecting it. I am swapping out the I-6 for a carburetored 350 vortec. So, I know the sm465 tranny bellhousing is the same, but what about the flywheel/clutch assembly? what starter would I use. is there any place that sells solid motor mounts for this application? I know I will have to modify the wiring as well, but that is no biggy to me.

I will be putting headers on it, a performer intake, and a 625 carter carb.

I belive you will need a new flywheel(i'm guessing)
The starter depends on if it mounted to the engine or the Bell
Engine Mounts can be bought from Off Road Design

If you plan to wheel your truck much at all, I would recommend going with a Qjet or Holley Truckavenger. I tried something different and ended up going back to the good Qjet. No problems since.

ahh, i thought the carter was good cause it had no fuel bowls so then it wouldnt have fuel slosh problems. but, i also have an 800 q-jet modified to 850cfm. thanks, joe

Carters have 2 fuel bowls , one on each side , and two floats . Without a fuel bowl , you would have no where to put the fuel for it to be drawn from . Quadrajet has a phenolic spacer in the float bowl to help prevent slosh . Mine runs anywhere so far and doesn't stall

WellI could be mistaken, but I think Carter is one of the manufacturers of the Q Jet.
Qjet is a model that was made by 2 companies through the years. I can't remember the second one but Carter is one of them.
Now if you have a different model of Carter Carbs then it's a different story.
I agree no substitute to a good Q Jet.

I've seen a few Carter built Q-jets, but they are all early variants...late 60's early 70's.

Identical to the Rochester ones, I guess maybe just built by carter due to build capacity/demand issues?

Thanks for reminding me, yes the other is rochester.
They built the same design and my guess is like you the high demand.
Just like Ford built some willys jeeps under the same contract and design to meet the deadlines for the army.
