Hi All,

I have notice a noise coming from the engine lately and am not quite sure what it is.

When I am on the freeway or going over about 50 I notice that when I let off the throttle a little that there is a ticking noise coming from the engine. It does not sound that bad but it is definitely noticeable, any idea what it could be or if I need to worry about it?

I don't think the noise is a knock, it sounds like it could be the valves/rockers but to be honest I am an amateur mechanic at best so I can't be sure.

Your thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks

OK, wild guess. Is it kind of a "blipping" noise? I'm thinking exhaust popping.

You might want to check the exhaust manifold.

Thanks for the suggestions but it sounds more mechanical. I have new headers with all new gaskets and have verified that everything is torqued properly.

Well, in that case, assuming it did not start as soon as the headers were installed, I'm a little stumped.

I suppose that wrist pins or rod bearings would make a noise when the load comes off the engine, but somehow I don't think so.

Does it have a clutch fan? Try wiggling it and spinning it when cold to see if it has any play.

Also, you need to post as much information about the vehicle as you can.
It will help.

If its stick I'm guessin exhaust leak somewhere.
yep, that is why I made the comment about if it started as soon as the new headers were put on.

Grab a stethoscope or put a piece of tubing in your ear and listen all around the header flange and collector flange. All it takes is a small puff of air to make a ticking sound, but on the end of the tube it is quite loud.
