Does anyone know where I can verify my engine by using the serial # on the engine? Its a 454 I would like to know out of what and horsepower and torque #'s. Also I would like to know if it is a good candidate to spend some money on or just buy another one. This one is only like 10000 miles old. Basically stock just has a performer intake RV cam runs decent just want more juice.

THe block casting # will usually only tell you the # of main bolts on it. If you get that, the date code, and the head casting #, you can make an ok guess as to the factory hp rating. If the engine is original, what is it in? I can tell you if its from the late 70s or 80's, its pretty danged low. www.mortec.com to look up casting #'s

Well the dude I bought it from wasn't sure he said it may be from a 73-74 chevelle-malibu or something. the # I got from it is 10225cwd142449428. I just wanted to know cuz I know some blocks are better for rebuilding than others and if the heads are any good or can I junk yard some better ones.

what # is that? the typical block casting # is either 6, 7, or 8 digits on the block, drivers side, where it bolts to the bellhousing. The head #'s, pull a valve cover and scrape the oil sludge off and read it. The heads should also be 6, 7 or 8 digits. Should be no letters in that.

O yeh as far as heads, the best heads for the bbc, are 049 or 781 large oval port heads. Install some larger valves (2.19/1.88) and they will outflow the rectangles that came on the ls6 454. Doubt you'll find any in a junkyard, but they were available from 73-84(049) 85(781). I found my 049 on ebay, paid about 100 bucks, had large valves, a little port work, and i still was 1300 less than new aluminum ones.

My friend is borrowing my truck right now so I don't know where he got that # said from the engine but I will have to ask him to be more specific after work.

Don't screw with any numbers but the suffix code to start with.

Looking for two or three letters in amongst some other numbers.

Not sure on BBC where that stamping is, but on SBC's, its on a flat pad on the front passenger side, where the head meets the block.

Suffix will tell you exactly what year, vehicle and HP rating.

Other parts can be changed obviously, but that will give you a darn good idea what it is.

Thanks :saweet: . .....would this be a good engine to fix up some? Or should I sell it and get one out of an actual truck? any Idea what kind of torque it has? I will be putting in some money into this truck after Christmas and don't want to make a mistake by putting some $$ in the wrong engine.

Nothing wrong with your motor as long as you are not planning a supercharger and a big hit of nitrous....

Do check the heads, you do not want to invest any $$$$ in a set of peanut ports....
