what is the best way besides taking a block to a engine builder to get a rusty block clean. Only the outside is rusted not the insides. Is it ok to sand blast a engine block?

o.k. put make sure that all holes and bolt thread holes are vary well pluged off. if just light rust try a chemical nutrilizer stuff.
You could try wire wheeling the block down to clean metal with a die grinder or drill.

Sure, you can sandblast it, but use the shot peen instead of sand if you can. Its what they use when you sent it out anyways... I think then they wash it after wards....
