Hey, '78 K10...When braking the entire truck will hop up and down like it has hydraulics...Pretty scary.

Any ideas?

Can you tell if it's the front or rear that's shaking? I've seen some pretty bad out of round drums do this.

It's the front because I do not currently have the rear drums linked to the system [last minute rearend swap]

Will I be able to tell if it's the rotors with the naked eye?

I'd start with making sure your wheel bearings are properly adjusted and then check the rotors for out of round. A dial indicator or even a scribe set up on the rotor surface while rotating will really quickly tell if there is an issue.

if you can see out of round with the naked eye, then its pretty friggin out of control. generally speaking the wobble or vibration people get in the pedal under braking on worn brake rotors is only a few hundredths out of round. i personally cant eyeball that myself.

Just a question...

and a fair one, sorry if my reply came off a bit condesending, wasnt meant that way. I just wanted to be clear that just because the rotors look ok, dosnt mean they are. We use dial calipers that measure thousands of an inch to measure out of round on rotors.

If you're using the front brakes only then I bet they're getting really hot and warping, are they purple in color? I put some wheel cylinders on my rear brakes once and didn't get all of the air bled out and warped a set of front rotors in just about 5 miles from the rears not working. I had 36' tires on it too.

Could be out of alignment too. Could be just good enough to go straight, but put on the brakes and look out!

Yeah, it actually drives really nice, steers well [for a lifted k10], doesn't make any loud noises indicating bad wheel bearings, everything's good. But when you hit the brakes...Better be focusing.

Sounds like you guys are probably spot on about the rotors.
