I've been trying to find some lower cost epoxy primer that I can buy or have shipped to CA. I bought a couple quarts of some when I did my bedliner, but the stuff (PPG DP90 line) was close to $75/quart. :eek1: I can't afford to do a whole truck at that price.

Eastwood and some other online places have some decent stuff, but won't ship to CA. Does anyone know of an automotive grade epoxy primer that is legal for use in CA? Even $100/gallon would be ok compared to what I've been using.

Edit: Just called around some more and it appears California outlawed epoxy primers as of Jan 8th. :( Urethane is now the second best legal option at $160/gallon. Sheesh...

urethane is better in many ways.. epoxy primer is kinda old tech...

Dupont's 2K stuff is nice.. i pay around $100, maybe $120ish now (gotta get a gal for myself next week so i'll find out) with catalyst...

I much prefer it to an epoxy, even better with zinc chromate under it...

I run with PPG DP epoxy primer. I could ship you some if you can't get it out there. It runs about $80-90/quart with hardner/reduce. For bare metal it's your best choice if you want a moisture barrier. Urethane makes an excellent top coat primer because it is easily sanded and blocked out. Most all paint products now days are lead and chromate free which is too bad fro rust protection. If you work within the curing window you can apply urethane over the epoxy primer without sanding. I generally prime the bare steel with PPG DP, do my body work over it (a nice thing about expoxies), then top coat with a urethane and block out. I use dupont 2k or PPG's version of the urethane depending which paint shop I happen to be at.

I guess it all depends what your are doing and trying to accomplish. bare steel I would hunt down epoxy, anything else I would run urethane. I would stay away from etching stuff.

Thanks, but after calling around to all my normal sources, I'm not sure I want to mess it anymore. If urethane is better (thanks Ryoken) and the nazi's are killing off epoxy, why fight it? I actually found an epoxy that is legal here (PPG DelFleet), but at $170/gallon, urethane is probably fine and much easier to find.

All depends what you are doing with it. I can't get epoxy here in MA but the CT line is close. urethane is good for some applications, epoxy for others. MA wants to goto water based automotive finishes so I am not sure if the Nazi's are always correct.

I'm certainly not an expert, but most of the next process is painting over previous factory finishes so I guess if urethane will adhere to that along with a few areas of bare metal and light filler, it'll be ok. When I was spraying the bedliner, the paint guy said the epoxy would give the best adherence to bare metal so I went with it, not knowing there was an environmental issue. I just want something that's tough.

Ugh, even the best water based stuff is crappy. I need stuff that sets up chemically and not have to wait for it to dry whenever it feels like it.

just hit the bare spots with a little zinc first....

For a few spots I agree with Ryoken. If you strip completely I recommend epoxy then do your body work over it. I would not use urethane over bare metal.

I don't think you one truck of epoxy primer is going to kill the environment any more than that trunk full of Li-ion batteries in a Prius. :haha:

imo, zinc/urethane is a better process... even on a completely stripped car... zinc sticks better than epoxy...

then again, if they outlawed epoxy, then i'll bet zinc chromate is illegal too.... :doah:

Yes on the zinc being outlawed to spray outside. I received my notice. Do not use it much though. Can still buy it with no issues.
