My buddy has an 80 K5 w/ a 350, we took the stock carb and intake off and put a edelbrock 600 and performer intake on it. Got it running and now it has this really weird inconsistent knock, it comes and goes and changes pitch. I used a screwdriver kinda like a stethescope and it seems to be coming from the passenger side around the egr block off plate. Was wondering if maybe since it doesnt have an egr valve anymore could that be causing some kind of pressure build up and its igniting in the intake??? anybody ever had this problem, any suggestion would be greatly appreciated, thanks!!!

weird thing is ran good with the knock and then fine tuned the timing and it runs better. All the emissions crap is rocket science to me anyway, my opinion the less the better

Well, without the EGR you are going to make the air/fuel mixture coming out the exhaust too rich which will destroy your cat. converter. The EGR is the exhaust gas recirculation system which takes unburnt air/fuel mixture from your exhaust manifold and recirculates it back into your intake to be burnt off again. It reduces tail pipe emissions and lowers your fuel mileage. Vehicle manufactures put systems there for a good reason and shouldn't be removed. Tampering with emission systems is also illegal in most states.

I would guess that it would be detonation. I wouldnt bother with any of the emissions stuff at all if you dont have to have it smogged.

I bet a pre-smog SBC would be cleaner and more powerful than a smog engine anyway, given they are comparable.
