Hey guys,
Is this an EVAP canister?

Is it necessary? (what does it do?)

I am a bit concerned because I found a line that leads to this canister broken under my truck:

Could this cause a gas smell?

Thanks Brian! I replaced the broken tubing and I defiantly do not smell the fumes like I did before. Maybe this will give me a tad better gas mileage now too? ;)

Thanks again

Hey guys,
I found a vacuum leak at the canister. The canister is old and cracked I think. Can I just ditch the whole system? Would I just cut the vapor hose at the tank and plug the ports on the carb /valve covers? ...or is that a bad idea?

you can get a new canister with less inputs, something from a TBI I think. Then you can just run the tank vent to it, from there it would go to a vacuum port on the engine. It would be better than no canister.

actually, looking back at your picture, you only have 3 inputs

man I wish I had that :(

I say find a new one, just like yours

Anyone know where to get a new canister for a first gen? Haven't seen any aftermarket, so I'm guessing junk yard?

So it doesn't do any good to bypass then? It would really clean things up on the engine compartment if it is not necessary.

Has anyone out there bypassed it for any reason?

to me, I'd rather the engine no pull vacuum directly from my gas tank vent. I'd rather have something between them, even if it's just a carbon canister.

but no, I've never bypassed it
