I haven't paid attention but I am guessing with the amount of old chevys going to the iron lately the price must be up. So while at the machine shop I am stopped by the local "scrapper" and he asks if I want a 4 speed and transfercase before he sends it to the yard. He told me $65 which I couldn't pass up. He told me he would drop it off at my house within the week. I asked him what transfercase and he said 203? I thought surely not but it didn't matter I wanted it either way. Sure enough he drops it off and it is a 465 203. He then asked if I wanted the 3/4 ton axles. I told him yes just drop them off. I think I am going to try to just start buying all the transmission, transfercases, and 3/4 1 ton axles he gets and start making a pile at the farm for later projects. They may never be worth alot but then I will have them for later

Its not a bad idea to stockpile these parts,if you have a need for them,or expect too,or there are enough old GM's in your area that they will be in demand ,because as we all know, the trucks are dissapearing very fast the past couple of years since scrap prices went way up..............................................................................................................................................................................................................I hate seeing all the old trucks here getting hauled off for scrap, without the parts even being offered for sale first..the junkyards dont even keep them more than a few days to a few weeks around here--IF they get one!....most of the scrap haulers here wont even get out of their trucks if you offer them twice the going rate for something they have in the back of their truck....some of them seem to delight in scrapping perfectly good parts, knowing you need them, and they have them, and YOU dont too...I've had more than one junkyard worker pick up & crush a vehicle I was just about to check out for some parts, with a devilish grin on his face...that had been there a long time, until I showed interest in it!...

This guy is usually pretty cool. A bit odd but he makes a living selling scrap iron so I think that is a job requirement. I think I can buy every 3/4 ton axle set ever for $150 a set. He only cares about weight. He always tries to sell the engines to the machine shop before sending them to the iron. I bought a running 454 tbi 3/4 ton sub from him last year just for the 454. We sold the trans and rear and with the iron made most of the money back. It is a double edged sword. Yes we can buy the parts cheap but it is because they are melting the rest into hondas.

holding onto as many parts as you can seems like a good idea to me. it seems like only a few years ago there were so many square body chevy trucks at the junkyards they would never run out. now they are getting rare. in some cases I've actually seen more 67-72 trucks than 73-91 stuff.

Now I have to decide how to do my doubler. I bought a 90 465 that had a 208 I was going to use with a 32 spline 203 but now I could use this. Of course I have a long box so length doesn't matter. I may save it for my buddy with a blazer that has a length concerns.

find me a set of 4.56 3/4s and drag them down to manhatten for me :thumb:

I bought a 465/203 adapter and input gear from blazingrockwells awhile back for the normal going rate.....and while they where in the mail I found a complete t-case with adapter for $100 2 miles from me on Craigslist. So I got that one too.

I normally just keep my eyes on CL, if I see something I might need for cheap, I buy it. If I dot use it, I sell it for profit. Ita works out great until I need something I sold 4 months ago and can't find one.

Thats funny, Im pretty sure that was mine, I sold it to blazingrockwells a couple years ago complete..I got it from another ck5er in pismo, forgot his name.

Marty just sold a kid we know a set. They aren't that hard to find. I will keep an eye peeled. Find me a 32 spline 205 with a fixed rear output and flanged front output for cheap.

The 4.56 sets are kind of rare around here. 4.10 sets are a dime a dozen though. I also don't see many 3.73 sets.

Depends on how cheaply I get them, and how many I have at the time. I sold the 4.56 set for $350, and I tossed in a set of used lock outs.

Last time I went to the scrapper there was a 205 gear box sitting by the scales complete with adapter, coupler and shifter. I asked if I could buy it from them. Paid $20 for it and took it home.

Shifts good, feels nice and tight with no grinding. The best part is since I planned on using if for a doubler I sold the adapter, coupler and shifter setup for around $150.:D

Sometimes it pays having a good memory and knowing what chevy parts look like when you're at the scrapper.
