I have an 89 suburban v20 with a stock rebuilt 350 motor, th400, 3.73, 295/75/16. Has a stock 2.5 inch exhaust.
I need a new muffler, but I'd like it to be as quiet as possible. I like a quiet exhaust in general, and this truck is used for hunting, often crawling in low range at night while hunting pigs with dogs and thermal equipment, or towing a Samurai to be used.

Best brand/size ideas?
Would a shop have stock takeoffs that would be suitable? What vehicles?

Thanks for any suggestions.

For quiet, you want a big case. Personally I would look for the biggest Magnaflow I could find. It's a good balance of performance and sound level.

Another thing that helps keep it quiet is keeping the long tailpipe.

When I needed a muffler for my wife's truck, I was thinking the same, super quiet.
I have a really good exhaust shop down the street from me, and I just stopped in and told them what I needed. They set me up with the rather large case muffler. I think it was like 80 bucks installed.

I like my Magnaflow and it’s quiet compared to my old Flowmaster set up but I wouldn’t consider it a part of the “as quiet as possible” category. My muffler is a big single 3” in/out version but it’s got a mellow tone at idle and will get moderately loud with throttle.

I think I'll try a stock muffler as suggested above for now, rock auto has one for 56$ delivered.
Just wondered if a something like a big block muffler would be quieter. Biggest trick is letting the truck crawl. Pigs pay more attention to acceleration/deceleration. Changes in rpm get their attention while a slow steady idle lets us ride right up on them. The samurai is deadly for this.

Thanks for the input!

I did a 3" in/out walker quiet flow . . Its o.k. but not factory quiet . And its a 350 sb engine no cat .

Thta's disappointing. But I do notice Walker doesn't come out and say OEM sound levels, just OEM sound quality. From what testing I was able to find in the past, they were some of the quietest out there.

Converters sometimes make a difference as well. Experiences seem varied.

I picked up a factory cat back dodge 1500 hemi setup for 50 bucks last fall at a yard sale . Going to try that muffler . The setup is all 3" . Little fab work and hope win .

The Jones quiet tone is nice. Real quiet for the most part.
They vary though.
I did a single behind a 4.8 in an 05 Silverado and it was louder than stock when getting in it. But quiet 90% of the time.
I put a pair of them behind a 4.6 in my town car and it was way quieter than I expected. Not the same as the truck at all.

I'll be interested in how this works out.
It seems there are a lot of noisy aftermarket exhausts in the bro/mall trucks around here. Their stock take-offs have to be sitting around somewhere, right?

Have a K5 and K20 in line next. Both will be getting upgrades and motor work, so I'll have opportunity to use this info again. Just want to get the burb rolling again right now.

Adding a resonator or a cat before the muffler makes a difference too.

Glad not to have that problem around here.
