I am getting the exhaust done on my truck, front to back, the whole thing.

I want to know how people are getting the passenger side tube to the driver side without droping the exhaust tube down around the front drive shaft...

And I am assuming that going duals straight to the back with no crossover, or "H" pipe thing would be easiest. But won't the truck sound like two 4 bangers battling under the hood??

Plus I though the crossover equalized exhaust pulses:confused:

And another question, can you do an "X" or "H" connection behind the transfer case, or would it be useless all the way back there?

This for an 89 suburban(something) with a TBI 350, and stock exhaust manifolds.

Thanks fellas.

Your best bet is a single 3" exhaust with a hi-flo cat and a performance muffler of some kind. You can have the shop tuck the passenger pipe up high and in front of the trans pan and over to a Y on the driver side. This is how mine is set-up and it works very well and is WAAAY out of harms way.

Thanks man,

This is probably the 4th or 5th time you've given me a solid answer in the last 3 weeks.

When I installed my edlelcrap headers and a hiflo cat, I had a local shop build mine

In response to the two 4 bangers under the hood, no, it won't sound like that. I actually like the sounds of true dual over the catback systems of today. No, an H or X pipe won't lose effectiveness back there. It's just there to help balance back pressure. Granted, putting an H under the bumper is pretty useless, but close to the muffler isn't so bad. An H right in front of the mufflers would be best.

Replace the stock manifolds with some shorties. Headers are nice, but it's a pain to replace starters with headers, but anything is better than stock.

different truck but same concept...

then it goes into the xpipe seen here... all 2.5" stuff oh yea and i have some high flow cats welded to the front of the xpipe now

i saw one at a swap meet where the guy used the stock y-pipe as his crossover and the rest of the stock system as half of his dual setup. he essentially did a saddle tap (not sure if everyone knows what that is) on the passenger side of the y-pipe and ran the new exhaust straight down the frame rail. glass packs and highflow cats. sounded pretty good and ran well. i won't speculate as to the actual gain or loss in performance, but it felt at least as good as stock.

Vortec: (newb question) What is a saddle trap??

Cajun4X4: IS the crossover behind the rear output of the transfer case, or is that the front??

It looks like the rear, but I want to know for sure...

And a question for pretty much anybody that knows:

Is single better then dual?? Does it add more to torque?? I am wondering this because 4X4HIGH said he is running single, and he has given me only correct answers so far (he's a friggin' walking chevy bible:bow:), but is does dual have ANY advantages over single that make it worth while??

I know the hot rodders do it, but I read a few threads a WHILE ago, and the magority of people said to go with single... I just plum forgot why:haha:

It's quieter on the trail. Listening to loud exhaust gets old quick on the trail. It's harder to hear breakage on your rig, and it's harder for others to hear their rig. Lack of exhaust increases horsepower, but there is a balance you need to find with exhaust. Too little and you burn valves, too much and you don't work right. Single 3" exhaust would be about perfect. I ran dual 2-1/2" for years, but always had a little bit of popping coming off of high RPM's.

it's easier to describe how one is used than simply what it is. you cut a hole in the pipe you want to tap into (the stock y-pipe in that guy's case), and the saddle tap is just a pipe that has a cutout to straddle the pipe and mate up tothe hole you cut. in the case of air ducts, you use duct sealant in the joints and in this case you'd weld it. the method is used when you want to use an existing pipe, but not have to cut out a section and fab a custom fitting. done right, it holds together well and flows well. i haven't seen it used on exhaust very many times, though.

Thanks Vortec, that cleared it right up for me.

Another question, how does everyone have their exhaust exit??

Straight out the back, or out the back at the side??

if you run it straight back, expect even more fumes blowing back into the cab than with stock exit. that's with the back window down and top on.

Speak of the devil- I just placed an order for a new exhaust from summit yesterday. My old one rusted through (at the header collector) and the muffler fell off too. Not even enough metal left for me to weld it back together.

Im doing duals- It just depends if you have cats or not. If you have cats, it increases cost- (two cats) instead of 1. I had a single 3", but it really wasnt that quiet. Flowmaster series 40 might have done that.

Im getting the summit 2.25" dual kit and an old pair of headers I got from another member here like 3 years ago. The kit was 139 dollars, mufflers were 18 each. thats 170 bucks.

headers: 25 (used)
exhaust system: 170
02 bung: 3
02 (off ebay): 10 shipped.
Carbon fiber exhaust gasket: 14
universal H- pipe kit: 31

I've since swapped the flowmaster out for a Dynomax turbo. The flowmaster had too much of a "tinny" sound for me.
