i got a random question ive been wondering for a long time and have heard many different answers.... is the exhaust brake (the kind u can get from banks) the same as a jake brake (like big rigs have) or is it two different type of engine brakes?

I always thought Jake Brakes were integrated into the valvetrain of big rigs and was different than the exhaust brake commonly used on the modern Pickup truck diesels.

as far as i understand, rigs do use it in the valvetrain. im pretty sure there is something that keeps the valves closed so its like having multiple compression strokes per cycle and actually can slow the rig

ya thats what i have always thought, jake brakes r valve train and exhaust brake is...well obviously the exhaust. i was reading something on a diesel power magazines site about a custom cummins power wagon some guy built and they took a pic of his exhaust brake and said with the addition of this jake brake blah blah blah...and i was thinking wtf...so i had to ask it here:rolleyes::D

jake or engine brakes hold the exhaust valves. Exhaust brakes hold the exhaust outlet after the manifold
