Exhaust "kit" for a72

Is there anywhere to get an exhaust system for our 72 blazers? I am thinking about buying a small 90 amp flux wire welder from HF and welding it up myself.

Ideas, thoughts?
 
Maybe a generic Flowmaster weld up kit would be a good start? I think you can those from Summit. Straight pieces, some bends, some U bends.... Good basis to build from, and you'll get good practice welding.

Kind of hard to say.... You could check a few local shops for a quote. Remember most shops use tubing benders that will not do true mandrel bends so they will be more restrictive than what you could build with that kit.

My guess is that you won't save much money doing it yourself, but you'll be able to build it exactly the way you want and if you're like me you'll have fun welding it all yourself(?)

Personally, I tried one of those welders and it left much to be desired. I wouldn't spend a nickle on that. Just my 2 cents. My exhaust from headers to the tip was about $500, but I made them use my old mufflers
 
Ok, let me throw this out there. With all of the header threads it seems like there is cutting, pounding or some type of "fitting" needed. Are there any "cheaper", decent headers out there that will just bolt on?

Thought about using 2.5" ram horns? Pull a search on it and there's quite a bit of info on them. I haven't got to run them yet, but they fit nice. Supposed to flow really well also.

Thanks man, I will do some digging into those Ram Horns, they look like they may be perfect.
 
4wd header designs always seem to be "not quite right" on these trucks.... And I personally got tired of how badly they fit. My headers are not even for a truck application, so I'll just modify the flange to clear the transfer case.

Ram horns are probably the best flowing "stock" solution but they are prone to cracking near the center ports.

Np perfect solutions unfortunately....every choice will have some limitations.

I know this is a few months old but I actually bought some Hooker competition headers and they fit really nice , I did have to modify my 4 speed linkage , I had to cut the lower bar off and move it towards the engine 1 inch. Other than that they fit perfect . I also bought the Hooker header 2 1/4 inch mandrell bent kit for the 72 4x4 blazer. I also purchased the summit racing wanabe flowmasater mufflers. I was able to get everything to line up pretty nice and even. Pretty good kit. There is some cutting to shorten a coupel tubes and welding that needed to be done on the mufflers but it worked well and sounds good. The exhaust system was 170.00, mufflers were 25.00 a peice on sale, headers were 180.00.
 
If i bought a 2.5" die for a jd2 bender.... Could i bend exhaust tubing with nice mandral bends? Or would that not work?

I am not sure if their dies are meant to work with exhaust tubing because its so thin. If you did try it, I would highly suggest packing the tubing with sand.

By definition, a mandrel bend requires......well, a mandrel. Its a flexible insert that is loaded on the inside of the tube beforehand to prevent the tube from losing any internal diameter as its bent.

Odds of successfully bending exhaust tubing yourself are about 0%... :D. You an buy an exhaust "builders kit" from Summit or Jegs that has all sorts of pre-bent segments is what ever diameter you need. You can cut and weld those into a perfect-fitting system.
