Hi,

I need to figure out the best way to route my dual exhaust after installing a doubler. Unfortunately the only spot to route it without some kind of weird crossover pipe to the other side of the truck is to run it around the 205 right next to the frame where the fuel line is running.

How close is too close to run the exhaust next to the metal fuel line? If I did this, it would likely be within 2". This sounds too close to me. The picture shows the layout.

I know when I did mine last month I didn't like the look of going in the frame rail that close to my fuel and brake lines so I did a crossover under the tranny but I also went with a single instead of a dual...anyway point being sounds too close.

Mine was gonna be really close like that with duals , I opted just to do a croosover on my rig that splits in the rear, I still got way better performance than stock. Won't you have to run dual cats in Cali though? I know alot of other guys who have them on their trucks but never liked the idea of how close that was either. If you have a body lift maybe you could run it on top of the frame rail. I'm swapping the body on my truck and thinking about tacking a piece of pipe running the length of the rail and routing my gas lines in it. Might be able to try something like that on the outside of the frame rail also, dang now I have another project for the list, thanks alot.

zoomies!!! :)

I really have no other constructive help...

hehe, that's a good pic. :)

I have a 71 so caty's are not an issue. A body lift would probably work, but I'm trying not to go any higher than it already is. Maybe I'll have to do it anyway.

So it sounds like maybe routing the one side under the tranny might be the best option and just running dual pipes down the drivers side and split them up again at the back. The bad part about that is that my ground clearance under the tranny already kinda sucks.:(

What's the distance from pipe to line?

Running a return line is going to change the variables, but I can crawl under mine tonight and see what kind of clearance I have. My lines aren't down the passenger side, but they might be somewhat close on the drivers side with the dual exhaust. I suspect more clearance than you can get, but I'll be more than happy to crawl under there and get a measurement.

Yea, a measurement would be helpful. My clearance might be about 2 inches. It would depend on how much clearance from the frame I kept as well.

I have duals, no cats. My fuel line runs inside the frame rails, and hasn't been a problem. What was a problem was running it to the mechanical fuel pump on the block. I took the mechanical pump out, ran with electric, then re-routed the fuel lines from the fram rail up close to the fire wall to the carb.

I also wrapped any part of the fuel line that was anywhere close to a heat source in Thermotec Wrap, and all runs just fine now. Running Thermotec wrap should handle things for you.

I rerouted all of my fuel lines on my 72 to the very bottom inside of the frame, and ran the pipe OVER the transfercase right below where it says "line" in your pic.

But i don't have a doubler either, and am using the 2 bolts to the side of the t-case, preventing the pipe there.

Really the only issue you may encounter is vapor lock and i don't think you'll have that problem if you're at least 2" away from the fuel line but it certainly wouldn't hurt to wrap the fuel line in an asbestos wrap.

Why not try wrapping it , if that doesnt work is there a way to run the fuel line on the outside of the frame?

My new exhaust is really REALLY close to the fule line, pump and filter. So far I only had a problem on the trail when I was going really slow and there is no air to cool things off. I will build an aluminum heat shield as soon as I get some aluminum.

Where can I get some asbestos wrap in Cali? :)

Yea, I know what you mean. Maybe I'll try and find something like that.

My fuel filter is right about 2" away from the exhaust pipe right near the t-case crossmember, while the fuel lines themselves are about 3.5" away for a distance of a couple of feet.

I doubt that you would have any sort of problem with metal fuel lines. even if they were resting against an exhaust pipe.
I ran my exhaust different after i installed my sm465 and np205 (the crossmember and front driveshaft were in the way of my y-pipe.) I ran elbows off of my headers and ran them on the out side of the frame rail back along the door and out right in front of the back tires.
