Thinking of redoing the headers and connection, ive got a ticking (exhaust leak) that I just cant make go away. Thinking of going with a ball and socket setup, most of the time, its on the piping, but has anyone done this right off a Header?

hedman and a few others come stock with ball/flange.. it can be retrofitted on a 3 bolt setup by welding one in.. they do sell just that piece on Summit, etc...

even tho ball/socket is far superior to a 3 bolt, I've found nothing as bulletproof as a slipfit...

if ya want ball/socket, my suggestion would be just to pony up for some fresh headers equiped with it...

What Ryoken said. I have Flowtech headers and they are ball/socket for the Y-pipe and NEVER a leak.

yea my headers fit my truck very well , so Im going to retro fit the ball/socket setup. Thanks for the heads up on Hedman, going to see if local speedshop has them, if not ill order them.

Just out of curiousity, I have a set of these Hedman headers on my truck. How do you guys keep the collectors tight? No matter what, the bolts always loosen up and leak. Sorry for the threadjack...

I plan to use nylon lock nut and lock washer.

Don't plan on them staying tight then as the heat will melt the nylon in the nut and then they'll just back off. The proper kind of nut to be using on exhaust is a long brass nut (the nut is taller than a standard nut).

I use Percy's aluminum collector gaskets
gasketshttp://www.summitracing.com/parts/PHP-66002

grade 8 bolts with double nuts = no leaks :D

Install new bolts and double-nut them, you'll never have to worry about it again :waytogo:

I had headers only once on one truck, they quickly rotted away, and I wasn't sad to see them go--put regular stock manifolds back on instead...noticed very little difference in performance, and was tired of them always "ticking" at the heads, blowing out the gaskets there, and at the collectors...............................................................................................one thing I did that helped prolong the collector gaskets life span, was to put a tight fitting muffler adapter inside the collector and the header ,so the hot gases wouldn't be able to get at the flange as much where the gasket goes--it made a big difference, having a "sleeve" inside to route the hot exhaust away from there....the flanges warp easily too, most are too thin...I had to use double gaskets to get a seal on my warped collectors...

I'm thinking about swapping to ball and socket. They worked great on my dads k5. As far as gaskets go I use the aluminum ones, and have never had an issue with them leaking at the heads. I did blow out several paper style ones until I ponied up and bought the aluminum ones.

Sure its the y pipe connection and not the header leaking at the head?

Im sure..its an ill fit at the collector/pipe fitment and ive tried one of those super thick aluminum gaskets. Ive also replaced the header to head gasket with the best they have. Ive never been happy with the flange to flange type connections anyways.

V band
Slip fit
Ball and socket
Welded

Would rather have any of those than regular 3 bolt flange. I've always had issues with them

Got a set of cheap hedman's with the ball and socket flange. Great setup I must say, I did have to locktite the bolts though. Havent had any collector leaks since than.

Got my parts from local speed shop, they were cheaper than the online places like Jegs & Summit.

Going to install these next weekend.
