I will be doing my exhaust very soon. I have been thinking about getting a complete custom setup, with a 3" downpipe going into 3.5". I will have a muffler, so I need to choose that also. One of my concerns with this is a hear the local guy can only do 3". He is also 6+ miles away. Can one drive without a downpipe 6+ miles?

So I have been thinking about buying an off the shelf exhaust. Are than any options for my '89 Suburban? Can I mod a kit for a newer truck? Does banks have downpipes available???

You can drive without the downpipe. I'd go with an AeroTurbine muffler. There are a few kits. But they are expensive because of shipping. Plus, custom you can route it any way you want to. Make sure it is the same diameter the whole system. So he doesnt bend it where the bends are smaller that the straights.

3" is plenty d00d. Heck, the outlet of the TO4 turbo on your Banks setup is only 2.5" or so...

I'd agree that 3" is plenty. I have 3" straight pipe all the way back from the turbo and it's not obnoxious at all (turbos make good mufflers).

Banks does sell a very nice downpipe - the part number is 52010.

Heck, I'm going to run my existing 3" system with the Cummins I'm transplanting in. Until I get well over the 300HP mark I have no need for anything larger. As with the TO4 turbo on the Banks kit, the outlet of my Holset WH1C is only 2.5", so it's the main bottleneck in the system anyway.

A lot of guys (myself included) like the look of a 3.5 or 4" exhaust pipe exiting from the truck. What you do is run 3" up to the last bend exiting the truck, and then use a 3"-4" adapter and make the exit bend and exhaust tip 4". That way you get the big exhaust looks without the hefty expense :deal:
