Dont know why, or what may cause it... or if its just normal... Been like this since I got it.

Ive not turned or tweeked anything, and dont know what the PO might have done...

However, I think its a bit TOO rich.. Almost obnoxious.

Starts and runs fine otherwise.

Ideas?

Thanks,
Andrew

I've noticed some anti-gel additives and cleaners can make some nasty fumes--noticed it more when I used diesel in my torpedo heater in my garage and decided to add some "Power-Kleen" to the fuel in hopes of keeping the heater working more efficiently.....I had to bail,go outside and let my lungs recover,my eyes were red and burning too....I noticed this when I used it in my truck too,but not as severely.............................................................................................If you hadn't used any fuel additives, maybe its just the new low sulpher diesel thats more "stinky"?....perhaps something was added at the refinery to reduce gelling or keep it from going stale too??........who knows whats in our fuel nowadays anyway?...

Out here they are adding 5% bio-diesel to bring back the lubricity. But, it may be nothing more than an engine that is getting old and not operating as efficiently as it used to. Have you done a compression check? Checked the timing?

No, neither. Honestly, dont know how, exactly to do a comp check, though I have the general idea. Id hate to open the lines just to have to bleed them again...

I have no way of checking the timing, with the DB2 pump, Im thinking Ill need some special equipment that has long since found it's way to the bottom of the landfill.

Maybe I have an injector that is not firing, or something along that line, and Im smelling more or less, unburnt fuel? It "kinda" smells like that...

Jesus... wheres that Wonka smell-a-vision when you need it! :dunno:

Thanks-
Andrew

Actually, I never get black smoke, thats for children anyway... Mine is always gray at startup and on heavy load when warm.

A diesel timing light is required, but it shouldn't be expensive to have done at a shop. 10 years ago I had it done for $30 after I put in a new IP myself.

The compression can be checked through the glow plug holes if you have the right gauge.

One that goes up to 500 psi!..a typical gas engine compression tester tops out at 150-175 psi,a diesel will bury the needle on one and possibly pop it!...I think the mimimum compression for a 6.2 is 350 psi at cranking speed, but I'm not sure--my books aren't handy...

Harbor Freight sells a cheap one that works. But, the only adapter they have that fits goes in the injector hole rather than the glow plug.
I got the one from Harbor freight and it goes in the glow plug hole:dunno:
Or maybe I am mistaken and I got it from NAPA?
I'll have to look at the HF ones online.
Just checked, mine is not a HF but the cheaper HF box has the right adapter for the glowplug hole, and it's $37

They may have changed the kit since I bought mine. Good to know it has the right adapters now though!
