About to order a cv shaft for the k5, question is from who? So far it's between Denny's Driveshafts, High Angle Driveline, and Tom Woods. Anybody have a certain preference for quality, customer service, etc...

I've dealt with both HAD and Tom Wood's over the years, both have been good to me.

HAD is basically one guy, Jesse, who builds insanely heavy duty stuff. (I don't think the man understands the concept of "good enough" :haha: ) If you want a literally bomb-proof driveline, he can set you up, though it won't be cheap.

My experience is that TW's is lighter heavy-duty, if that makes sense. (They may well be able to build to your spec, if you wanted nuclear-resistant a la HAD, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.)

Both make good product, in my experience. HAD is more of a one-man shop, vs TW's a "company" (of ~10 employees according to their website), if that makes a difference to you.

Now, ain't either gonna be cheap, especially when shipping's involved. (Did I mention that HAD is only one county away from me? :D ) You might end up better off with a local driveline shop, at least cost-wise, especially if you want something closer to stock strength and just need the CV for angles.

Yeah I talked to one shop here and they basically said they wouldn't build me one, which was nice. That's the only reason I am "outsourcing".

:dunno: Heck of a business model. I'm sure the mail order houses will be happy to get their business.

Yeah after some research I just found a place out in Clearwater that makes "off-road" driveshafts. It even says competitive pricing on their site!

My front and rear TW shafts still seem fine, though Ive changed to a longer slip for the front and replaced the U-joints. I've had both kiss rocks occasionally and they are still smooth at 80mph.

Yeah that's who I talked to originally and they seemed very helpful. I'm gonna talk to this local shop tomorrow and see what they say and I'll probably go with Tom Woods if they don't pan out.

Well talked to another semi local shop, Performance Shaft Technologies, and they said for me to bring the driveshaft in and see if they can use some of the parts to make a cv shaft. If not they said if they build one it will cost around 350-400. Looks like I found my place.

if shaft is stock and has the ballooned center tube with yoke ends smaller at the tubes then the parts wont work .

My only complaint with Tom Woods is that he just will not build what you ask for the first time. Twice now I've ordered something specific just to be told that it wasn't what I wanted. And twice they've gone back and been re-built to how I wanted them in the first place after they failed to fit or perform as expected.

My next order will be with Jessie at HAD.

I need a CV shaft too and talked to a local shop about adding a CV to my current shaft. Won't work cause my rear shaft is 4" diameter and there isn't a 4" CV available.

Yeah I am just gonna bring the old one up there regardless, they can at least use the slip yoke if nothing else I figure. Maybe they will take some more off for giving them some scrap they can use on another shaft :)

Ive been around and around with using old stock shafts to make new ones...buy a new one.

It usually doesnt save you much because they have to burn man hours cutting old parts up to make them usable. If the shaft just needed to be lengthened or shortened then it makes sense to get it re-tubed but i would just get a whole new shaft if you dont have a cv.

My personal experience with tom woods was lack luster as well. They didnt really care about what i wanted to accomplish, they wanted to fill an order sheet so i chose driveline service of Sacramento. They made me a killer shaft with .120" wall and i had it in 24 hours.

Obviously they arent near you but it may be worth the shipping if you cant get good service near you.

HAD is another great shop. Its about $550 for a one ton shaft with a CV and matching slip yoke.

If you have time to wait a week or so i wouldnt hesitate buying from Denny's driveshaft. You can order online and his one ton shafts run about $425 or so. He just has a longer lead time but i think he guarantees his shafts not to break so it may be worth waiting for.

And 500$ for a 1 ton shaft is a good deal. It ends up almost costing that having the factory cv dealt with. For the small extra bills, might as well never look back and go 1350 all through out the shaft.

dennys is only 2hr or so north of me .

my buddy has a 1350 rear with slip on the shaft style .

its in his k30 with built 400sbc and nv4500/205 . 38" tsl sx tires and locked frt/rear . holding up just fine.

Hmmm...well would it be worth it to keep the stock slip yoke and just get them to build a new cv shaft or should I try to get them to make me the whole new assembly 1350 the whole way through.

Yeah exactly! A lot of the time shops will say they'll build a cheaper shaft but you end up with cheap components. 1350 all day!

Yeah ive heard good things. If i didnt need everything yesterday id have one of his drivelines under my truck!
