I have a 1991 K5 and want to run an external fuel pump on the frame rail instead of the in-the-tank fuel pump. A few questions:

1) Can I modify the 91 tank with a longer pick-up tube (since no fuel pump will be in the tank) and use this tank? Issues with sender etc.?

or

2) Has anyone found an aftermarket tank/fuel cell that will mount in the same position as the stock tank and have the return line capability and purge line? Seems like the roll over vents on some tanks I have used in the past would work for the purge or just eliminate the purge all together.

or

3) Has anyone mounted a fuel cell in the rear of the passanger compartment and plumbed to the external fill point?

I have reviewed the previous posts but they seem to lack specifics. Thanks for any help!!

It can easily be done to eliminate the in-tank pump but the bigger question is why? The in-tank pump will last longer, and run quieter. If you're worried about the in-tank pump going bad and having to deal with replacing it i would do two things, install a QUALITY pump from the get go and second you could cut an access hole in the floor and make a "trap door" for easy access at a later date.

If you choose to remove the in-tank pump you just basically need to remove the pump and buy a piece of submersible fuel hose and extend the hose from the sender to the bottom of the tank and attach it to the "sock". It would be easier to rob some stuff from a non TBI truck sender to accomplish this though.
