Is it so much to ask to be able to find one of these locally?

I ran across some buggered threads on a tie rod end last weekend. Too far gone to get a die started even after being meticulous with a needle file...well...too far beyond my abilities perhaps. I know you can get a thread file but why not something quick and easy that clamps down on the good threads and allows you to run back up over the bad threads.

So, I do a little research and come up with one that OTC makes. SnapOn makes one too...but they only go down to 1.25"!?!?!? WTF good does that do for the 9 times out of 10 you need it for a smaller bolt.

On to more research. Find a company based in Israel called Nes Technologies that makes a whole line.

Actually, the prices are pretty reasonable (for a specialty tool) when purchased through a local distributor (Thousand Oaks, CA - http://www.wantasub.com/nesexunthre.html) but why the hell am I going to ISRAEL to find a tool that every Ace or Home Depot should carry? Actually, it looks like Home Depot used to carry one but doesn't anymore...makes no sense.

Am I missing something here?

I know for smaller stuff there is a two piece die nut that you put the two halves together on the good threads then thread it up off the threads to chase the buggered up threads. I'm not sure what they're actually called but i'll see if I can find them for you.

Yeah that's originally what I was thinking when I was looking this up but I couldn't remember a name or anything.

Much appreciated!

I don't have pictures, but I have 2 eight sided thread files that I use ALL the time. One standard, and one metric. I can get pictures of them if you want. Mine are MAC if I remember correctly. Never seen one like the ones you posted.

I have a 4 set of the 8 sided thread files. They are the best thing in the world when you need them. Mine are Nicholson thread restoring files. The four piece is part number 33024, but you can buy them single also.

Resurrection...

For the pitman arm shaft what thread pitch is needed? The nut starts for stops right away. Can I fix this with a thread file and if so what size thread file do I need?

Yes thread file

It’s something like 7/8-14, we’ll see if I remember to look by the time I get home

That or thread file
Confirmed 7/8-14, which is NF-UNF standard
Nut from true value as a chaser in lieu of the die Jeff listed
I used that nut to drive the arm home on a few troublesome boxes and then used the factory nut and washer.
