so my licence is suspended for 6 months so i now have extra time to work on the k5. i want to make it a barly street legal truck but a good trusty truck on trails were is a good spot to start

Speeding ticket, K5, does not compute.......... 
Problem I have found with stuff that is "barely legal" is what is, and isn't legal is open to the interpretation of the officer who may not be as up on the vehicle code as you are.
My only advice in Kalifornia, leave smog equipment intact! Possibilities for harassment and large fines (even it getting impounded) aren't worth it. That being said, most officers will pay no attention to your K5 or mine (at least in OC where I live) unless its a rolling emissions check point or you have spikes on the front bumper with a fake decapitated head on it....................
