I traded an old Quadrajet for some stamped steel F**d shock towers at a swap meet this weekend. I initially did it thinking I'd sell them on the classifieds.

After looking at my current shock mounting what are the good or bad arguments for putting angle on them to correctly span the steering shaft etc and installing them? I've spent a pretty good amount of time searching and mostly they seem to benefit the II Gen's.

Brace them on the back side with gussets to the top of the frame if you can.

The leverage they generate against the frame is astounding. I've seen a "windowed" frame where those mounts tore out on both sides from the leverage. :yikes:

So do i assume that's one vote for nay?

I don't think its a vote for 'nay'. Greg is simply pointing out that they should be braced properly and not just bolted onto the frame. I have a few ideas for when it's time to redo mine.

True....

Not an absolute endictment against them, more of a caution against bolting on a $15 bracket and ignoring possible consequences. With a little bit of extra gusseting it can be a perfectly valid solution.

Not only would I gusset them on the backside to the top of the frame. I would also build plates for the back side of the frame where you bolt them through. Make the plates larger than the bracket.

I guess this will be one of those some day buildups. Right now I dont have any shocks to take advantage of the additional travel and don't really see what my advantages are, so I'll just shelve these for now. Thanks for the input.

Greg - During my searches I found another post by you regarding bracing. I seriously see the point (and agree) in giving this some support even though their not 1"x1" square tubing with a side removed. :doah:
