thanks for the input guys . the job is done and end result will work just fine .

having this moved to the tool shed section .

----------------------------------------------------------------------

so you work at a place and they wish to make a few items for equipment to help with work flow . they know you can do it and have the tools .

what would you do ?

fab outside of work at home shop for my set rate ?

or

fab at work with bringing in your own welder / plasma cutter / grinder / other tools ?

next is if at work what would be a good way to discuss the different pay rate for supplying your own special tools they don't have and there not going to need or wish to buy there own of for later use .

any help would be great guys thanks .

Give them a bid do the job at your shop.
Bringing the tools to work, creates a liability issue, esp if someone gets hurt, or fire or....
Not to mention, the co-workers who think your doing g jobs or goofing off

Depends on the quantity of work. At my former job I would use my welder occasionally and have the boss buy me a full spool of wire for it. I only used a fraction of the spool so it worked out nicely for me. I would also have him grab some grinding wheels and flap discs and I would keep the extras, all while working my normal hourly rate. If it was a regular thing I would have worked out something different but for a couple projects it worked out well for me.

hard to bid this job as its cut apart 2 items / use parts / make 1 new item / make new item pin on to yet another item .

i could just let them know my fab rate and go from there . also see how he wants to pay .

more a 1 time job thing . i was thinking the same thing of 1 spool of wire / 1 bottle of gas / grinding wheels .

i do fabbing for work as needed.... weld machines, build cradles, etc... machine/fab custom boat parts.. i have the lathe, drill press, etc... they call The LAB™, the machine shop...

but i just charge them for any materials, consumables i use... no different labor, it's sooo infrequent that I'm doing that "outside the box" kinda stuff...... it's just on the clock, my house is like 7 minutes away.... i just run home and do what we need done... or bring the welder in, etc...... i don't mind going home and working in my shop for the morning and such....

Just make damn certain the agreement and all details of it are understood amongst all parties up front and in writing.

Doing so is in everyone's best interests and ambiguity is the mother of all F-bomb-ups in such cases.

This. Been there done it every way possible. Keep it separate.

Only reason to do it at their shop would be if the part created is a high liability part. If it breaks the world can sue you. If so, do it in their place under their liability.

I did $150 a day over my pay plus $100 move in and out. They tried to farm it out. After they got prices back, they asked when I could have it done. And somebody else had to do my work those days.

Something like that. I'd bill them per piece. Figure out what it costs you, add any profit and do it at your place.

Unless this was going to be a regular occurrence and you are using a scorp or something...

I would do it on company time and asked to be compensated in materials that they normally buy from a place they normally buy it from. Not money. It more or less eliminates your liability and they get a sweet deal. So I don't know what they do but if they normally buy from Grainger/Zoro and you always wanted a new Journeyman 450 torch set... there you go.

Bid it as time/material.

took the plasma cutter to work and cut down 2 old rolling ladder platforms that were 6ft tall each . 1 i cut the ladder and platform as one and cut the width of the platform down smaller . the other i took just the ladder section . these will be welded together to make one and then it will be caged in on the platform and a few heavy duty rings to clip one self in with on the platform cage when up there with a safety harness .

its working out to supply's i use get replaced and a few extras to keep and my normal pay . 1 time job and stupid easy for me to bang out so what the heck .

more pics to come with it being made to fit its new home and end use .

last few day has been busy and i got some time on this between other work jobs .

she got a full cage up on the platform with 4 tie in rings for safety harness
2nd units ladder was grafted to the main unit .
then she was floated over the DE-ICE trailer for mockup of the mounting points .
she will be bolted in place to the trailer so if for some reason we need to remove it it can come off with 4 3/4" bolts .

well job is done with all metal used from old 2 rolling ladder platform units .

left it a open square down were the tank is now cause the tank is old and showing its age . at some point it will need to be swapped out . we made the choice now to have it setup for square tote pallet tanks for the replacement later . this will keep us from handling the de-ice type 1 as much . and the tote is more compact and will give us room to add a type 4 anti-ice tank and sprayer in the front .

i passed it off today to the other guys to scuff and prep for a brush job of paint over it all to blend in .

12ft 1" off the ground for the platform . full cage with 4 eye rings to tie off on with anti fall device . and my pile of tools ready to come back home . the plasma cutter cart is packed with grinders / drill / p.p.gear / supplies .
