Fabricating my custom dash, pics. 8/24 update post 24

It's the other way around...6061 cracks when bent, 5053 is formable. Both are weldable though. 7075 is not weldable.

Thanks Rene for confirming, I was sure about the 6061 cracking since I have had it crack on my before, But I was only going by what I read, and had herd from talking to people saying 5052 is formable, I have never worked with it.

1/8" 5053 can be formed to 90 degrees with a 1/8" rad without cracking...welds nice too.

Small update. I got the Aluminum dash hung on the dash tubes today. It ain't much progress but it's some. The fit is pretty good. I still need to pop rivit the dash sides to the lower bent panel but for fitment it doesn't really matter. I'm going to Roll the bottom edge aswell. It will look clean and wont have an edge to hit my shins on. I still need to weld in the dash tubes, I didn't want to yet till I knew this dash was going to fit right.

It snaps over the top tube with a great fit. You can see where I cut radius's to match the tube on the side panels. I will flair them out once their rivited to close up the gap on the sides a bit. I really need to get some Dzus weld on plates asap and get some gauges ordered. I did some grinding for a better fit but overall it looks pretty good and Im happy with my first dash.

I can see the bottom of the windshield and the rubber windshield trim while sitting in the driver seat. Its an optical illusion in the picture. It only looks really high but it's not.

couple more. When the dash it pushed forward and the side radius cuts are touching the lower dash tube there is almost no gap to the bottom tube across the lower dash panel. In this pic I held the camera under the dash and pointed it up toward the roof and took a pic but I was not holding the dash tight to the tube. Also when its pushed to the lower dash tube the gap over the shifter tube closes up and in not as big over the top of the tube. I have to trim a little in the third pic for room for a weld there.

Looking good! Watch out for squeak points.

Moving right along nice job and write up.

Thanks for the props guys. I have the money for either gauges or a aftermarket AC/Heater unit right now. I think the AC/heater unit is the one I need to continue progress with the most. Gauges will be easy to deal with once I have them. Still need to fab the Top of the dash pannel too. Little at a time.

So how did this turn out? Its a great write up but wheres the end product? Looks great so far!

This is one of the coolest dashes I have ever seen on a K5!!! Now I need to see how it came out!!

You all know how these projects are. You get burnt out and have to take a break. Not to mention the economy and funds right now. NOT a good time to spend the cash on gauges or a heater/AC unit. Been doing alot of dirt bike riding too. BUT! I have been getting the itch to get back at it. Soon, very soon there will be some progress. Thanks for the props guys.
