fabricating zero rates

well, i talked to a buddy of mine last week about making some shackles, and he offered up the use of his shop ( http://www.geocities.com/~ksracecars/ksrace.html ). he says he's got all the equipment (lathe, band saw, drill press etc etc).

so i was thinking...how hard would it be to make a set of zero rates? just some 1" stock about 6 inches long with some holes drilled in it right? bevel the edges and viola! am i leaving anything out?

plus it will give me a chance to talk $$$ about fabbing a rollcage.

yes, they should be as wide as the springs. are you planning on just the lift or are you going to move the axle?

To move the axle you'll need at least two holes in the zero rate. Both will have to have a countersunk flatbottom hole.

thats where i think his mill/lathe will come in handy. any idea about how big the countersunk holes should be? my guess would be 7/16"- 1/2" or so (assuming a 1" zero rate) deep and about 3/4 inch wide.

countersunk hole should be big enough to get a socket around the nut and deep enought so the nut is below the surface of the zero rate.
