For my 1983 K5 I'm trying to clean up the wiring. It's been so long I can't remember what the factory radio was like. Did it have continuous power to maintain presets or anything? Or was it one of those mechanical memory push button deals?

If anyone can remember, there's a connector that goes to the factory radio with four wires. One is accessory power, one is ground, another maybe dimmed light? Anyone know the fourth? Thanks for any help. I may have found the schematic, but the purpose of the wires isn't clear.

What color wires? You would have a constant hot, switched hot, ground, and illumination.

J +12 Volt Ignition Wire Y ellow
K Headlight Dimmer Wire Gray
L Ground Wire Black
M +12 Volt Battery Wire Orange

That's what I was hoping. I had an adapter harness on it with four wires, but when I traced back there were only three on the original side. I think they are switched power, ground and lights. Must have been a mechanical memory radio in 1983, at least for the one I have. I was hoping to clean it up a bit, but I had to keep my new run of "always on".

I really doubt an 83 didn't have a constant hot lead. No experience with stuff that old, but my guess is that there is no Illumination, or it grounds through the mounts.

Grab a multimeter (or hell, steal the courtesy light bulb and make a test light) and test the wires. Not that difficult.

Sorry to hijack, but can anyone tell me what color the factory in-window antenna wire is? That's been bugging me for a while.

Of course I tested the wires. All dead with the key off. Why would you need full time power when there is no memory in the radio?
