My truck has a factory tachometer which currently is stuck at 1500 RPM lol. I've never hooked up a tach to an HEI distributor before but i looked at my distributor and it has special connections for the tach and they have wires going to them and appear to be hooked up.

The Tach itself has 3 wires coming from it and only one of those is the same as the what I see on the distributor.

On the distributor there is a ground that goes to the base of the distributor and then 2 others, one that I see connected to the tach and another that goes into a tube of wires and cant trace.

I hope i didnt make this more confusing than it needs to be. I would just like to see the RPMS since I do have a tach. If anyone knows what to look for and do it would be appreciated.

The tach wiring is very simple, there's the signal wire to the distributor, a 12+ switched source, and a ground. You do not need to pull the whole cluster to get at the tach wiring, just remove the cluster bezel, then the tach. After checking the wiring, don't be surprised if the tach is bad.

I've been told that tachman.com can fix them. This is purely 2nd hand info.

Do the tach move at all when you turn on the ign switch? The needle on most good tachs rests around 1500 with the switch of, when the switch is on the tach should drop to zero. All of the bad tachs I've seen will have the needle at rest somewhere else on the scale (or even straight down). To me, it sounds like yours is not getting power.

Check all the connections USSkoval described.
