Fast Shifting and Free wheeling Hubs

On second thought, I should add that auto hubs only lock when they want to lock. If you're stationary, and they weren't already locked...they stay unlocked. If you're buried in a snowdrift, they won't lock in until AFTER you've spun the front driveshaft, after you've dug the hole deeper. And sometimes it can take a bit before they lock in or unlock. So there are downsides to using them.

Is it worth changing over ?
I like the idea of knowing if they are locked or not. Never had a Chevy with the auto locking hubs, but the Ford I had with them sucked(so did the hubs). If one didn't unlock it would pull one way or the other.

That being said, if they are working good now, I'd leave them until I found a really good deal on some used ones

Auto locking hubs are convenient and they're fine most of the time, but they have a tendency to act up as they age. My old set eventually started partially locking when they wanted to. If you do any kind of serious wheeling you'll want to go manual.

This is always handy.

That's a good plan , Thanks Chris

Where does it say he has a 350 trans or a 400??

"...350 - Automatic" and since we were talking about transmissions, assumed that was the transmission ID. As common as a swap as that used to be, would have been no surprise.

Obviously OP, if you have a 700R4, there is no modulator as has been stated.

My 1990 still has the original auto hubs, they work flawlessly, but you do want to be sure to engage them while the front wheels are still rolling, you can't engage 4wd at a stop and expect the hubs to lock up,I have got over 250000 on mine, keep telling myself when they go bad I will put manual ones in,just has not been necasary yet

I did Not know that , So I should shift while moving while tranny's in neutral and then place the floor shifter from 2H to 4H ?

You can shift it stopped, but the hubs won't lock up till the tires make a couple revolutions, also when I shift mine from 2hi to 4 hi when moving,I just ease up on the gas and slide it into 4hi,neutral on the transmission is not necessary, also be doing less than 30mph when you shift

Yes. You do want to be stopped and in neutral when switching between high and low range.
