Father & son's first project: '93 Honda XR80R

I have never heard of the molasses trick, I'll have to keep that in mind in the future.

Nothing much to look at, but we are making progress. I showed my son how to change the oil, and how to check the oil properly. Then we changed the spark plug, and I showed him how to check the plug gap. The old plug was black like it's been running rich, and not gapped correctly( old plug looked recently replaced, but black). I'm hoping it's not going to be an issue. I may pull the carb to give it a good cleaning while we have the bike torn apart.
I ordered new tires, tubes, and rim strips for his bike, and a bunch of stuff for my old yamaha that should be here by next Wednesday. He's getting tired of scrubbing every part on the bike, but I keep telling him it will be worth it. It's really starting to shape up nicely, and I think when we are done it will look and hopefully run like new.

fyi these honda bikes these days love ngk plugs.

and good to tech him the in's / out's of basic engine info :thumb:

Thanks for the tip on the NGK plugs, I could only get an autolite the other day, but I'll order the proper plug for the bike.

Not much of an update, I've been crazy busy lately, I started night school for my work 3 weeks ago, so I've mostly been collecting parts and cleaning up and doing some prep work. Most of the important parts are here just waiting to be installed on my sons XR80R. My sons in bed, so I started sanding the tank for my yamaha tonight.

It has about a dozen dents to be filled, but nothing too bad...
I'm hoping to get the dents filled and in primer by tomorrow night. I'd like to have it painted this weekend if life cooperates!
I ordered a more modern taillight and license plate holder, probably take some creative re-engineering to make it work.

I also ordered a cheapo set of turn signals.

The originals were big, ugly, and stuck out to far on the sides for my liking, so I just picked up a simple, short-stalk set to tuck them in closer to the bike. I plan on cruising the neighborhood now and then, so it has to be put back to street legal. Nothing too fancy, just functional. I'm charging the new battery as I type this, and I'd love to fire the old girl up in the next few days!

I started filling the dents, probably take a couple more rounds of filler and block sanding, shot it with primer just to seal it up for now. Since I'll be sanding most of the primer back off I couldn't resist trying the Tractor Supply Ford Red implement paint out just for fun. The tank looks much better already.
I also put the new carburetor and air box back on, just waiting to finish the tank up so I can fire it up.

It's been a while... Between work, school, and health issues with my son, we had to put these projects on the back burner. We sanded and put the first coat of white on the tank and fender plastics, so far it's looking great! I loosely threw everything on there tonight to take a quick teaser progress picture!

I plan to add some red to the original side skirts instead of the factory blue to make it look more like a newer XR80. I have the sticker kit to surprise my son with, I think it will make it look pretty cool. Now I need to get the new tubes and tires on so we can enjoy some Fall weather to start teaching him how to ride finally!!! I'm going to touch up the frame and hardware also, it should look like a new bike when it's done, well at least for the first few minutes of riding...

I may have just scored a frame with paperwork for the '75 Yamaha Dt125 Enduro for dirt cheap!!! If so, it means I can FINALLY get the bike registered and titled here in Pa for much less $$$. Keeping my fingers crossed it works out. It would be sweet to be able to cruise around the neighborhood on it, even though it's absolutely gutless. I really hate the title laws here in pa, there are so many bikes that are almost worthless because guys are too cheap to transfer titles when they buy them...

ya all the many hondas i have had ( 14-15 of them ) thay love ngk the best .

iirc if you a buy a "honda" brand plug it is an ngk.
also on my bike 2005 crf the tank is plastic as well and ive seen people try to paint them but some say that the tank is somewhat porous so even if you don't spill filling it up the vapours will bubble the paint from the inside out. Just what ive heard.

also the bike is coming along really nice, I remember working on bikes with my dad.

I did pick up that frame for the Yamaha. I'll be sandblasting and painting it, then the swap over will begin!!! It will make a nice little scooter for aroun town. I paid $33 for the frame on eBay, ended up taking the whole family on the trip to get it in Conneticut, which resulted in us heading to Mystic Seaport, so it cost me $160 in gas, $90 in food, $48 for tickets to get in to Mystic, and a fortune in the gift shop for the kids... 450 miles round trip, but it was a fun day!

Picked up a used front wheel for the yamaha as well as a new seat cover off of eBay today! My front wheel was bent, and my seat cover was torn. I figure since I'm into the yamaha this far already I might as well do a full restomod treatment.

I also picked up a media blasting cabinet for the basement bike shop. I can't use my big sandblasting setup at my house, so I'll use the bench top cabinet at home, and leave the big sandblaster up at my in-laws where I do the larger items anyway.

I'm excited to get back to work on the bikes again! Hoping to get my son riding by early spring.
