Has anyone done this? Is it just a cosmetic thing or will it help anything.

Here is my b4 and after rendentions.

Lots of folks trim off the front fangs and rear 1/4 panel skirts, looks good and helps a lot with clearance. I cut my fangs off even with the bottom of the core support.

I put 33's on my 2wd...I cut it just below the the bumper. It's not noticeable, unless your into that kind of thing

done it on mine too, well not the new one yet. But I know I will but all body mods will happen the same summer so I can get paint on it before winter.

Careful it may lead to this

Been there, done that. Just kinda 'eyeballed it' when I had the stock bumper off to replace with the DIY4X bumper. Cut it off below the inner fender or you'll be hammering the inner fender up out of sight.

pic whoring on...

de fanged as well.

I wanted to cut it to make it even with the front, but the core support is in the way. not sure what to do there.

Mine is de-fanged too -- Cut mine off level with the bottom of the core support using a really long sawzall blade

Cut flush with the bottom of the core support:

With a small radius from the wheel opening:

It could stand to be trimmed forward a little more to leave room for steering (turned slightly right in this photo) :
