hey guys

i just bought a 77 K10 shortbed lifted with 36in super swampers. the guy who im buying it from said it's squirrely on the highway so were thingking of trailering it home.
How long of a trailer would we need to bring it home? Whats the wheelbase and legnth?

thanks

wheel base is 117.5 inches. not sure on the length but it'll be about 2 feet more than the wheelbase.

heres what the owners said "that with the 36" Super Swamper tires on it , its NOT good on the highway! Anything over 45-50 mph and its like riding on a washing machine, and likes to wander. Its all because of the swamper tires, like I said. They are actually rated by DOT for 45 mph"

wadda ya guys think? what could be wrong with it that would make it wonder? we'll have to dirve about 80 miles home. i have some 30inch tires from an 84 chevy shortbed 6 lug they'll fit the 77 right?

thanks for helpin the newb

Yeah old worn bias ply swampers can ride pretty bad. Hell some brand new swampers arent great. You could put the small tires on it. Depending on the gearing. If it's geared properly for 36's (which it probably isnt) the little tires will cause really high RPM's. I'd say the small tires are a good plan if you dont wanna deal with the wobbling wandering for 80 miles. All GM 6 lug stuff is the same.

so the swampers will cause it to wander? what is the gearing if is stock? what should it be for 35-36's?

thanks for enlightning me

Yeah Super Swampers can get pretty out of balance, and wander because the are big and wide. They like to follow the grooves in the road. Stock gearing could be from 3.08 to 4.11's Probably 3.08 to 3.73. Correct gears for 35's-36's should be 4.11-4.56 in my opinion. More highway time 4.11's More wheeling time 4.56's :wink1:

I would bet alot of the wander problem is either in worn out steering or uncorrected steering with the lift. it needs a dropped pitman arm a raised steering block or a dropped drag link if not then yah swampers can ride bad but I had some 36"bais ply and I could drive 75 no problem.
