Let my dad borrow the cummins to haul his camper south (his duramax continues to fail us but that's another story), drove his fifth wheel from NY to NC and found the following when unhooking...

This is a very stout BW hitch that locks down in the turnover ball system, I'm amazed at the damage and that the trailer didn't disconnect... Heck, he didn't even know until it was unhooked at final destination

Said when he left, he needed to take a sharp turn down an off angle driveway, otherwise it was all highway miles.

Spoke to B&W, they're in somewhat of disbelief too, they're going to stand by their product and have shipped me a replacement for free. They believe his pin box has a wedge which caught and tore the unit. I can't verify with the trailer down in NC at the moment.

I'm just glad my dad and mom didn't get in an accident

Wow

Yeah, not one of the hitch's welds failed, it was all plate steel tearing - nothing wrong with jaws.

Might try and get it straightened and welded up to use behind tractor on 3 point for easy maneuvering around barn

In the mountains there's a lot of those turns. Crest a rise it drops down and turns 90" at the same time. When we went to Pawpaws house we took the back roads when the 4 lane stopped. I swear I saw our ass end pass us many a time! Glad your folks are o.k.!

if your going to be doing a lot of flex / turns / angles then it probably better to convert to a gooseneck ball hitch to let the truck and trailer flex a lot more before binding up .

Definitely.
That is why there's the gooseneck design

Newer trailer designs use a wedge, his had a wedge and peeled the fifth wheel plate like a tuna can. Agreed, gooseneck articulates better but does Not have the same stability as a fifth wheel.

Nothing bad to say about B&W, stood by their product, wrong application for their hitch (dad has a superglide). Replacement installed and already used with heavier trailer - all is well.
