SLO C5
1/2 ton status
I've had my Sub for almost 4 months now. I've had this grinding noise for a while now, and I couldn't pinpoint it. It would happen in 2WD and 4WD(much more frequent and loud), and particularly when making low speed, sharp left turns. It is throttle sensitive. I got under there with some help of some fellow CK5'ers in the area, and realized I had a busted tranny mount. This was allowing the transfer case/tranny to move around and the front CV on the transfer case would hit the crossmember. We put on a new mount, and it helped with some of the noise I had(the banging), but not all of it(it turns out there were 2 separate noises). The crossmember contact was more the banging noise.
I began to think it was the PS box/pump, as I'd put the car in park and turn the wheel full lock left and hear the noise. I had a friend turn the wheels while I put my ear in the fender and it seemed bo be coming from that area. I added fluid and nothing changed. I then had a friend walk right next to me as I crept along in slow circles and he said the noise was actually coming from the front, not by the PS box area. Driving it around with a listener was the key.
It turns out that the fan was contacting the plastic shroud down at the bottom. A few minutes with a dremel should solve that. I know the radiator and engine have been replaced, and a tranny cooler was added. Maybe the shroud wasn't mounted back in place?
Or could this be a sign that my motor mounts are going bad? If things are moving around that much, especially in 4WD, then maybe that's something to look at. How easy is it to replace them, and where can I find the parts?
Anyway, now that I know it's not something wrong with the drivetrain(axle, hub, U-joint, etc..) I feel safe to finally go wheel the piss out of it now.
