Yes,I'm glad there is no snow here yet..its 34 degrees here and sunny today--yesterday it was in the 50's early, rain is expected for New Years Eve (booo)--and New Years Day is expected to possibly hit upper 50's,maybe 60!..then back to the 30's again..
We had about 6" of snow here fall just before thanksgiving--but since then its been rain, rain, rain, just like the previous 3 months..
Seems like it got very cold early this year,it was 14 degrees thanksgiving day,and stayed well below normal for weeks since, some record lows--every time it warmed above freezing it rains, when its cold its clear, dry and windy..
Big snowstorms are "fun" until it comes time to move all that snow off your driveway, walks and steps..or until someone dies because of them..
The Blizzard of '78 changed my life--I had never seen so much snow, with winds over 60+ mph sustained for so long..
We had 36" of snow fall in as many hours, but the winds drifted snow up as high as the second floor of some homes..
We'd seen plenty of 2 footer storms before, but they didn't come with hurricane force winds and high tides at the worst point of the lunar cycle..
100 people died in New England and 4,500 were injured as a result of the storm...
We have had a few storms that rivaled the snow totals of the '78 Blizzard, but not the wind or high tides..winter of 2015 starting in late January was the worst I've seen since then,it only snowed once in December 2014,a 22" storm, then nothing until the last week of January--then it snowed every 3-4 days until March, and many of the storms were in the 18"-24+" range--soon there was nowhere to pile it,and over 12 feet fell in just over a month's time..our "average" snowfall here is about 40"...
Ever since then I've had a healthy respect/fear of heavy snowfalls..and mother nature in general..
This past summer I had a lightning bolt strike a transformer about 100 feet from where I'm sitting, and the damage it did was awe inspiring..blew the transformer apart, all the oil in it caught on fire instantly, and the pole burnt to a cinder within 5 minutes, while the wires arced and danced on the ground, creating enough heat to start the grass and dirt on fire, despite monsoon downpours happening at the same time..
