Hopefully it wont be too long until the 396 (402ci) is in the K5. I just ordered $800 worth of parts from Jegs, so I'm waiting for Mr.Postman anxiously. I've started to clean it up, prepping it for paint. Man I sure hope it fits in there!

If you have the small valve covers it will clear better..
If you put in some roller rockers and a stud girdle and end up having to run tall valve covers, then it will be worse. :o
Some guys use a sledge to make it clear, or you could cut a section of the firewall out and patch in a step if its that bad. (go look at hot rods with BBC at a car show. :wink1: )
Burt, Did you have to Use the sledge a bit?

I did bang bang on the firewall a tad bit. At first I bent up the wrong spot, about two inches too far toward the fender on the driver's side. So the head is about 1/8" away from the firewall but I can still remove the vavle cover and with the ORD HPengine mounts my 454 does not move at all so the 1/8" I have is fine even though it could have used one more WACK! You can't even see the dent that much as the engine blocks it from view :D and all the black paint kinda blends it all together ;)

I think the valve covers are close to stock height. Plus I've got a 3in body lift, so I'm thinking that'll make it easier. Also I'm using SBC engine mounts. But I dont have a problem with beating on the firewall to make it fit either. I'm more concerned about the headers and oil pan not clearing

I need to get a new oil pan pretty soon. I'd like to find one that will fit without any crossmember modifications. Would a stock 5qt pan work?

I too have a 3"body lift.

See I also used a engine mount cross-member from a 73+ SBC 4x4truck. This alowed me to use ORD's HP engine mounts wich I belive is key to keeping my 454 from moving as clearance is tight in 3 spots, driver's side head, pass side header & oil pan to x-member.

This isn't a very good pic but inbetween the pan and the top of the x-member is about 1/8" of clearence. The pan I am using is a GM pan that has a windige tray (sp?) & baffel (I think that is what it's called, I haven't thought about the terms in a while and I could be miss-speaking them??)
Anyway I hope this helps.

those valve covers look just like a set I had once, they were hollys and looked pretty nice :D

If there is a picture in your post I can't see it. Are you remote linking a photo from somewere? If so my work's firewall is probly blocking it...

Here ya go, you could probably have seen it from home but this is too good to make you wait. :D
